Shows That Don't Know When To Quit

The thing about stuff like a show "quitting while it's ahead" is that every show that has more than a few seasons has its ups and downs. People are way, way, WAY too quick to scream "jump the shark". Patience is something you need when investing in a TV show.

There are two shows listed so far that I don't really agree with. One is South Park. I didn't get into this show until about a year and a half ago, I've seen nearly every episode now and I love it. Season 12 was a little lame overall, I thought, but I liked nearly every episode in season 13. But even the early seasons had a couple of not-so-great episodes each, but I think it's the type of show that can last a very long time and always have as many hits as misses. I'm hoping it will get renewed through it's 20th season, honestly, because I'm not ready to see it end.

The other is CSI...if this was a show that was more character-based and had an arc, then maybe, but procedurals aren't limited by that. I do wish that steamy pile of crap known as "CSI: Miami" would end but I occasionally catch episodes of Vegas and it seems no worse or better than it's always been. It has a few years left in it at least.

Right now I don't watch anything that I'd say is past its prime, although I'm hoping Desperate Housewives will end next year like was always planned. I was so annoyed when Marc Cherry decided he wanted it to run at least nine seasons. They should focus on delivering an outstanding final season next year, and since the guy is developing another dramedy he can focus on that.
 
CSI springs to mind, especially Vegas and Miami. I LOVE New York, but the other two are old and getting tiring now. (Plus
I'm having a hard time taking CSI:Miami seriously now after Supernatural ripped it off! LOL
)

I like the new format they're doing now with focussing on one character per episode than just be the Meredith and McDreamy show. But I've fallen deeply in love with the Arizona character so ... Oh I agree about Arizona. She is most definitely the best part of the show right now.

I still think it has gone too far though. They have turned Christina into a shell of herself. And Izzie, I mean why put her through what she went through last season and then tear her and Alex apart? It just felt ridiculous. I have huge issues with alot of the last 2 season so that kinda colours my opinion.
 
The X - Files : Samantha became starlight, or something. Huh!?

That 70's show : Fez / Jackie, that new kid Randy. Meh!

Profiler : Season 4. No Sam. No Jack of all Trades. No point.

Charmed : Not a huge fan but they sure died a lot. Almost every episode and then - magic - alive again.

Family Guy : Seth McFarlane is all about the money, less about the funny.

Smallville : Where's Lex? Why does Tom Welling look so bored?

All reality TV. 😀
 
the X-Files: This show had its up's and down's, but the last 2 seasons were pretty much just total downfall. And the second movie didn't really make it any better. I wonder if we do get a third movie, and if we do, what they're gonna do with it. I'm pretty sure it would be mytharc, which could be pretty cool, but on the other hand, the mytharc already did become so screwed up towards the end of the show. I still don't get the Samantha thing, what was up with William, and who the hell supersoldiers were.

Desperate Housewives: At the beginning this show was pretty cool, with quite the sneaky intrigues and stuff. Now you have some sort of desaster once (occasionally twice) a year, which kills some redundant characters and usually claims some regular. I just read some spoilers about the latest desaster victims, and if it is who spoiler sources point at, I'm already pissed off. And the show is just getting so incredibly unrealistic. You didn't have that at the beginning.

Charmed: Another example of the last season really sucking. Charmed used to be my favourite show in my early teens, but by the time the last season was on, it was pretty dead. Might have had something to do with all those budget-shortenings that got them to lay off established characters (like Leo and Darryl) and replace them with some teenage witch and her brat sister that no one cared about.

You have any confirmation on that? I only find rumours. But of course it wouldn't be surprising at all if this is the last season. I'm expecting it to be. Just haven't seen any confirmation. The show has sure has it's up and down and I've been thinking of stop watching a lot of times but I enjoy this season.


As for Simpsons and South Park I've never followed any of them but as long as they got the viewers and make money it's not like the companies will cancel them. So it's up to the creators. Or more specificly the ones doing the shows at the moment who ever that might be. I watched Family guy and loved the first seasons but stopped about a year ago. I like American dad better but for the moment I'm not watching that either since I try to cut down on the number of shows I watch.

And I agree with Craig about The West Wing. It's not that the last seasons are bad but they're just not as good as the first ones. But it's now fun to see Obama happening before it happened in real life. Santos was at least partially based on Obama. 🙂

I got a feeling that I'll agree with X.files too but stopped watching when it aired and have a few seasons to go in my rewatch before I get to the end.
 
I've always thought that Scrubs went on way too long.

How many seasons is there? 8/9?
 
I definitely think The Simpsons has gone on too long. I remember the older season episodes being about the family and their relationships, now it's just over the top silliness. Scrubs is another one that's went on too long. It annoys me a bit though, since I like having every season of a show I like on DVD, but how many seasons of The Simpsons are there now? And the later ones are not worth buying anyway.
 
I agree with posters saying that Smallville and One Tree Hill overstayed their welcome. I think Smallville and OTH both should have ended after 4 seasons. I think 90210 should stop already. Aren't they on the 2nd remake of the serious now? I know it's different characters and all, but come on. I know a poster mentioned "idol" but I don't know if they were talking about American Idol. I was on season 6 and followed the show closely up until last year...but come...Ellen DeGeneres is replacing Paula Abdul for 5 years. There is going to be 13 seasons of Idol? I don't think so... Idol should have also ended after season 4 or 5.
 
Scrubs and One Tree Hill.

One of my best friends is obsessed with Scrubs (To the point I ended up getting her Scrubs merch. for christmas. But that's another story) and she keeps going on about how upsetting it is that season 8 just finished. And I truly didn't care. I watched a few episodes somewhere in season 1 or 2, and it was pretty fun, then a season 8 episode was on the other day when I was in the living room and it was so incredibly dull. I don't get how everyone at my school likes that stuff, I mean, seriously - When things stop getting funny, they just shouldn't be on anymore.

As for One Tree Hill, I adore One Tree Hill, yes, but I really hate season seven. That maybe because I can't stand watching it since
Peyton and Lucas left
, but I just think the storylines are getting quite weak, too. In the first few seasons I thought it was amazing; most of the storylines seemed pretty original, but now so many of them have been done in other shows, or in previous seasons of OTH itself, and it's just getting dull.

I suppose that's the same as all the soaps here like Eastenders and crap like that, I used to love watching soaps; but now they just repeat storylines. When shows find themselves doing that...They should definitely either think of something new, or just give up.
 
I don't really agree about LOST. On that show, the producers even put a deal into place several years ago so the show would definitely end after the sixth season. We now have 18 episodes left and I wish there would even be a few more.
 
The only shows that come to mind for me that have been far too overdue has to be:

Smallville - That show has to quit soon, I just seem to think with each season it gets a little weaker and they should just end it before it gets killed completely. Now Lex Luthor isn't it anymore I think its lost its edge.

Heroes - I loved this show when it first aired but the last 2 seasons have been so boring that I've given up on the show entirely and I don't think I will be tuning in to the new season when it airs in the UK.

America's Next Top Model - How many cycles is it now? 13 or 14? Far too many and this show has really run its course now, it used to be so fun to watch but now its just a constant repeat with more drama than you'd see in Big Brother at times.

Season 4 of Heroes is actually pretty good so far. Not up there with 1 but close. I was surprised myself.
