Sick of Xander now?

Thankfully, we have "Conversations with Dead People 7ABB07". the big attraction was, Xander wasn't in it. He got repugnant in "Dead Man's Party 3ABB02" and never really changed after that.

I think that both of those reasons aren't as half as important as Dawn's safety. Dawn still trusts Spike and that trust can be very easily abused. Remember that at this point in the story, Spike's plans are unknown. This is why keeping the truth from Dawn is monumentally irresponsible - not that I blame Buffy, I get why she does not want to talk about it but still, Dawn needs to be clued in. If Buffy can't do that, somebody else has to. Might as well be Xander.

Yeah, I don't like how he does it but I still think that it's the right thing to do.

That really feels like rationalization to me. You are saying that Buffy is so unaware she is sending her sister off to be attacked? Or is it that Xander is so worried that someone who has left town will suddenly return to attack Dawn? Or Both? Spike can't even touch her with bad intent - everyone is safe - so there is no need to warn. Just jealousy and bitterness, IMO.

I see you feel differently about it than Buffy does. Since she's Dawn's sister, and was the one assaulted, then she gets to decide all of this - if when and how to tell her younger sister.. You really dis-empower a survivor when you try to reduce them to witless victims who can't make good decisions. Xander really had no right to do what he did.

But I'm sure it pisses off Spike fans - that can be all that you like. That's cool.

I'm sorry but what? You don't take someone to a guy who just the night before tried to freaking rape you. You don't take ANYONE there. And sure as hell not someone you supposedly care about.

And lets not forget that Dawn probably wouldn't even register as human with the chip and considering Spike's state of mind she was anything but safe around him. Plus Spike as protector would be totally useless. His crypt is under survaillance so if Warren were to show up he can't do anything (Warren is human). If Dark Willow comes by well...flame on.

Either way taking Dawn to Spike is nonsense and actually despicable. You don't take your underaged, virginal sister to your attempted rapist. The hell?

Personally I have no issues with Xander telling her about it. Dawn's safety trumps Buffy's secrecy any day of the week. Did it come out right? Hell no. But again when you have your friend run amok in grief, your other friend almost raped and trying to protect a bunch of losers from getting killed...talk about being under major stress. And then you get hit with a whammy like what Dawn said to him. I doubt most people in that situation would say it the right way.

To get back more on topic. I think high school Xander would drive me up a wall. I can't stand judgemental hypocrites with verbal diarrhea and who are also verbally abusive to those they think can take it. Post high school he might have been useless and limited to his relationship with Anya but I actually think that's the better Xander. He's the one character that for me comes out looking good at the end of the show. Writer's negligence was actually a blessing in disguise for his character when one considers what was done to those they paid attention to (Buffy, Willow and to a lesser extend Giles). He didn't lose some of those high school traits but he mellowed some and being relegated to a background prop (especially in S7) was actually a good thing in his case.

You don't. She did. I trust her, even though she's the one who was almost raped. Survivors can make good decisions. And since Spike was long gone, and the chip worked on Dawn, there was nothing to warn her about.

Xander does have a vindictive streak - remember 'kick his butt'?

I did like him in season 7. That's where I really saw growth.

And what would we talk about at a
"gathering" anyway? "So Buffy - run
into any nice pimps on your travels?
And by the by, thanks for ruining our
lives for the past three months..."

And I think that's exactly why his character doesn't age well. It just goes over the line.

I love Xander in the high school years,he's hilarious. I like him a lot in season 4,his wandering from multiple jobs looking for his place in the world is something i can relate to a lot. Its season five where he starts to annoy me some, but he wins me back in season 6,love him there and happy he gets to save the world this time. 🙂 In season 7,he annoys me again until near the end, then I like him again,i also love the Dawn speech in potentials,so very Xander 🙂 SO overall,i think he's hilarious and provides great comic relief throughout the series, but on the down side i will say that he has small strides in character development during the series. Also,i feel if he is the "average guy" that he should've died somewhere in season seven, even if we waited until the final big fight scene. anyways, there my two cents. 🙂

I'm not sick of Xander at all, he's one of the best characters in the verse. I'm a big fan of the High School years and Xander's humour is a big part of that. He gets plenty of good lines and it's also a way to relieve some of the tension amongst the group.

I'd disagree about Xander being the average guy though. I think he's an extraordinary guy that doesn't have any powers. He puts himself on the line time and time again to protect his friends and the rest of the world. It's not because he's fearless, he's plenty scared, but because he can overcome those fears to do what needs to be done.

Some people seem to get hung up on what Xanders role is within the group and I'm not really sure why that is. First and foremost he's there because that's his family. And his position in the group? Doing whatever needs to be done to help no matter how big or small the task. Small tasks eg. getting the doughnuts, repairing the house, babysitting Dawn. Big tasks eg. reviving Buffy, saving Giles from decapitation, talking Willow down from the brink.

When he loses an eye he doesn't start crying about it he gets straight back into the fight. Then once the world changes there Xander is again performing a new role as a watcher / commander. The guy's awesome and important from the beginning and right the way through.

More Spike talk on a thread not about the him?

For a character many seem to hate on here it sure seems like some like to keep talking about him. *g*

But anyhoo I loved Xander from the start and I do think he was meant to be 'Mr Every man' in that they didn't throw supernatural powers his way and managed to make him interesting without resorting to such.

Sure he can be aggravating at times, but so can most people. He's not perfect but then none of the other characters are.

Actually the conversations is much more about Xander and Buffy's different views during 'Villains' and how people justify them.
Should Xander have told Dawn at that time, or let Buffy do it? Is Buffy thinking clearly in regards to Spike? It 's actually about her mindset.

Spike is completely incidental to this discussion. 🙂

Except it was the Spike fans who first mentioned his name on page 1 so take it up with them. 😉

Actually that was about Dawn and Xander - and Buffy. The incident they are reacting to does include Spike but he has already left town by then. The question was whether Xander had the right to tell Dawn something Buffy didn't want him to tell - because he did and some people count that against him.

I agree, this hasn't turned into a Spuffy argument, just having Spike mentioned in a discussion does not make it a Spike/Spuffy discussion.

Despite this comment 🙂

AnthonyCordova,
I'm not sure I understand what this thread means, Sick of Xander now?
Are you inferring that I wasn't sick of him by the 2nd episode of season 1?

Xander is like Chandler from Friends. He's so much funnier in the earlier seasons but as he matures and grows up, he becomes less funny.

I love Xander in every single season. And I don't think I'd have ever been a Buffy fan if Xander wasn't in the show. As for Conversations with Dead People - Xander should have been in that episode since breaking Xander is the reason the house fell down on Buffy in Empty Places. We should have seen the First trying to break Xander.

Xander always annoyed me. His jealousy every time Buffy got a boyfriend, his treatment of Cordelia and Anya, how judgmental he is, etc. He's my least favorite character on the show.
