I think the article is very clear that it is serious.

There are real discussions to be had about women and professional organised sport, but I find this to be nonsense. There are about 4 different issues she is trying to tackle here and they don't all tie in together.

Yes, we should have be discussing about why women's team sports is given such little attention and time, from under age teams to professional teams, than men's teams. Yes, we should be looking at ways to bridge that gap to something of a more equal standing.

In a separate discussion we should be discussing about instituitionised misogyny and homophobia that can often infect male team sports. We should be looking at the pressure and expectation put on men to act a certain way, "to man up" or be aggressive both physically an sexually in order to prove his masculinity. We should talk about how it is often the women in these men's lives that become the pawns and victims of that environment. That is a very important conversation to have. But through this article she has just flung them all together and done a disservice to both issues and the people affected by them.

This article perfectly illustrates the PC world some people in my country inhabit all the time. Everything is viewed through this surreal lense where nobody can be seen to be excluded from anything.

It's all ageist this and sexist that.

According to the logic of this article because I'm a man I can't root for Jessica Ennis in the Olympics- because she's a woman and I therefore should feel left out.

I'd listen to the opinion of Karen Brady- who actually runs an English football club, not to mention a successful business woman in her own right- and she says that sexism is a shrinking problem in football.

Let's worry about an actual cultural problem in football, such as homophobia or racism, they are actually worth discussing.

Also misses the fact that a lot of guys in this country don't give a crap about football and would prefer to watch something else- Wimbledon starts next week. 🙂
 
If you say, why should women watch men's sports (*cough* because they're more interesting *cough*) when they can't participate in them?, then by that logic, men should never watch women's sports, and no body who isn't a professional athlete should watch sports either because they can't participate in them. Please.

Personally, I think more people here in the US probably know the names of the women's footie players than the men's. I mean, the women's World Cup in years past has been a big deal here. I suspect the US women's team could beat the men's.

As for all her stuff about football being sexist and leading to ill treatment of women, she's clearly never been to a pub during a football match - in the probably thousands I've been to I have never been treated discourteously by a male fan.

And then there's Hope Solo's domestic abuse charge from last week, so what does that do to her premise?

If they take sexism out of football, does that mean I have to stop oogling Xabi Alonso when he has his jersey off?

Thanks guys. I read it and thought it was ridiculous and then when I got to the end I thought maybe the writer was pulling my leg but I guess not.

I'm actually staggered that something like that can be published in a national news paper.
