Similarities between scenes in the Whedonverse

I've noticed a couple of similarities in scenes from show episodes in the Whedonverse . . . maybe too similar to be unintentional? Anyway, these are the two I've spotted. There may be more . . .

In BtVS "Grave", after Dark Willow immobilizes Giles by suspending him in mid-air, he still manages to unleash a blast of magic that causes Willow to lose her power over him and seems to hurt her.

In AtS "Not Fade Away", after Cyrus Vail immobilize Giles by suspending him in mid-air (and stabbing him) he still manages to unleash a blast of magic that causes Vail to lose his power over him and hurts him.

. . .

In BtVS "Consequences", after Willow discovers that Xander slept with Faith, she goes in a bathroom stall and cries, because of her love for him.

In Firefly "Heart of Gold", after Inara discovers that Malcom slept with Nandi, the madam, she cries when she's alone, because she has strong feelings, possibly love, for Malcom.

Thoughts? Comments?

I don't think Giles was in Not Fade Away ;)
I always find a few similarites between DH and BtVS like for Victor's conversation with Sierra in the closet about like he was there but couldn't move or anything is like Xander in Halloween.
 
I can't remember the other scene that is similar, but I know it exists! The one that I can remember right now is the scene in which Angel says something like "I just wanted you to know that this is Angel, this isn't Angellus, it's Angel!" then he tries to kill Wes while he's in the hospital. I'm a little annoyed that I can't remember the other scene; it might be in Buffy although I think it's another scene in Angel that follows the same theme--"I want you to know this is the real me" then they say or do something really mean and nasty.

It's Spike in "Lies My Parents Told Me." He says that to principal Wood but . . he doesn't actually kill him. 🙂
 
I don't know if anyone else had noticed that but i think there are odd similarities...or better parallel dialogues in episodes Innocence of Buffy and Epiphany of Angel.

in innocence evil Angelus comes back into the house,Buffy meets him all worried and anxious...then he tells her that she knows nothing about men...Buffy asks if she wasn't good

In Epiphany when Darla realises that Angel is still Angel...she starts talking about her being a proffessional...and that they did it right and stuff...

I can't really explain it but when i saw that scene in Angel...the first thing i thought it was Angelus' reaction to Buffy in Innocence...

any opinions on the matter are welcome 🙂
 
This is a great topic.

Off the bat, I always saw "Doublemeat Palace" and "Smile time" as being strikingly similar, both in directing style and thematically. They're both stand-alone episodes, (arguably) parodies, explore the "downsides"of commercial culture, and definitely have an amplified camp element.

Well, specific scene-wise, I'll have to give this some more thought but I'm sure I can come up with something.

The difference is, "Smile Time" was actually good! ;)
This, of course, is intentional but worth mentioning:

Near the end of "The Harvest" we have Buffy, Xander and Willow exchanging light banter while walking away from Giles who is looking after them and says "The Earth is doomed".

Seven years later, in "Chosen" before the battle against the Turok-Han, we have Buffy, Xander and Willow exchanging light banter, ignoring and walking away from Giles, who is looking after them and says "The Earth is definitely doomed".

It was so similar that it HAD to be on purpose right? Like the bizarro event, Perfect Happiness versus Perfect Despair, Virgin versus Pro. Darla is the anti-Buffy or whatever. It was a great scene.

One of the strong points on AtS was the humor take on the main characters.

And of course, Spike's "Sorry, love, I don't speak Chinese" showed first in "Fool for Love" when he killed his first slayer and later in "Damage" just before Dana immobilized him and cut off his hands (payback)
 
In Empty Places of BtVS, Andrew drew and wrote things to explain the Potentials about Ubervamp and The First. And in Ground State, Fred did the same thing when she explained Angel and Gunn about the Exist of Pithia(?). They both drew silly cartoon pictures. 😛

Also an obvious one, but the whole Connor and Dawn thing. Both teenagers, suddenly just popping up on the show. Also, both surrounded by a memory spell, for Dawn to get her into the reality of everyone, for Connor to get him out of there.
 
Yes, I always noticed that. I've never had a problem with it though because they are normally the episodes that I love. These stories or plots are normally some of reasons that I have for loving Joss's writing.
 
I just realized one.

In Deep Down, when Angel is imagening everyone is sitting happy together around the table, eating food, I find that quite similiar to Faith's dream in This Year's Girl, where she's making the bed with Buffy. Both are sort of 'happy' moments that make us go 'Huh?' because they're too good to be true, and then something happens that let's us realize it's all just a dream. In Angel's case, it was the food turning to dirty water (?), and then everything going all weird, in Fiaht's case it was the knife stuk in her.

I'm just watching Spin the Bottle and when Liam runs back into the hotel he says that they're hundreds of demons outside, meaning the cars. Just like noble Buffy in Halloween! 😀
 
Also, Anya references a world with nothing but shrimp.
In Angel season 5, Illyria says she's been to a "world with nothing but shrimp. I tired of that one quickly."
 
I don't know if this really applies to the topic of this thread, but no sense in making a whole new one.

I've always thought the line in 'The Freshman', "Can't wait till mom gets the bill for these books, I hope it's a funny aneurysm." is really sad considering her mom actually does die from a brain aneurysm one season later.

I don't think it was intentional, at least I really hope not, cause I think it's in bad taste if it was.

I think it was foreshadowing. A little on the bad taste side, I have to admit but the way Whedon plans all of this, I don't think there's any way that this could not be intentional.
