When Giles and Anya question the Beljoxa's Eye about the First, it tells them that the First is able to do all those things because Buffy's resurrection has caused a disruption/weakening in the Slayer line. But what makes it different than Buffy's resurrection in S1? Although her technical death was brief, Buffy was still dead enough to cause another Slayer to be activated. So why couldn't the First take advantage of the situation then? It would have been more successful as Buffy and the Scoobies were not as experienced and strong as in S7. Did it have to do with how long she was dead or how she was resurrected (CPR or magic)?

(Apologies if there was already a discussion of this nature, but I have not been able to find one.)
 
I think it was how she was resurrected. Though she did technically die in S1, it was 'natural'. In S6, Willow brought her back by invoking very dark powerful forces that defied the laws of nature, messing with life and death. It's part of the whole magic-has-consequences package.

My own logic behind it is that when buddy died in season 1 the slayer line moves onto kendra. When willow brings her back she slots her back into the slayer line, which is why the first believes killing buffy will activate a new slayer, so by putting buffy back in the line she messed up the slayer line.

Buffy's deaths in Season 1 and Season 5 are different if you accept the out of body experiences of people who have died and been resuscitated. Immediately after death, the soul remains close enough to the body to be pulled back in if they are brought back. Buffy was dead for much longer after Season 5, obviously, long enough to actually go to a place of final rest and reward that she defined as "Heaven." Looked at in that way, it wasn't Buffy actually being brought to life that caused the disruption, it was the fact that her soul passed over, and then was brought back. In other words, it was her SOUL being resurrected, not just her body, that caused all of the problems.
