Oh lord it’s Star Wars Legends all over again
God I really hope not. Buffy, Xena, Blake's 7 etc are a few of the shows that haven't been ruined by crappy remakes or reboots. Unlike Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, their legacies are untainted in that respect. Please let's keep it that way.
For the record I would have had 0 problem with a remake of Buffy or Xena for that matter in better circumstances. As characters I think they DO have potential to be reimagined again and again like Dracula and Batman. However dear god in this current culture war bullshit climate where everyone is absolutely insufferable on all sides.
Please do NOT touch either of these classics. Leave it ten years at least.
I can predict EXACTLY how a Buffy (or Xena) remake would go in the modern climate.
The showrunner who is completely inexperienced and hired to tick boxes makes numerous obnoxious statements in the media about how this show will drive incels who make up the majority of sci fi fandom crazy, about how they want less white men watching, about how the previous Buffy did nothing but celebrate the white male gaze and Buffy's whiteness and was a mask for white supremacy, about how the original is dated and dreadful compared to theirs, about how this is special because it has a woman of colour directing blah, blah, blah.
The show itself would have the most bland, boring and unimaginative monsters who would be an after thought. The showrunner would probably say something stupid about how they always hated vampire ficiton, and supernatural fiction and thought those genres were absolute crap, because they were only ever written by sad little man babies.
It would make references to whatever the current thing was at the time, not even in metaphors, but just flat out have the characters say it and date the show even more than the 90s version. If Trump gets in you know there would be comments about that non stop.
Buffy herself would constantly go on about how much she hates men, about how men are pigs.
Willow similarly would hate men and be a lesbian from the start, and Xander would probably have to be gay, and Giles would have to be black and again complain about how awful white men are and how he dealt with racism as part of the Watchers Council and whiteness is an evil Buffy can't defeat.
Also beyond the political crap, if any biased fans wrote for it, we'd see the likes of Angel either be depowered or overpowered because they were the fans favourite, least favourite. Think of the crap that would happen in the writers room over Bangel vs Spuffy?
At the same time, the fandom menace crowd like Nerdrotic, Critical Drinker would be every bit as insufferable.
First of all they would dogpile on it. They'd over analyse every single bit of it and trash it non stop to the point where even if it wasn't shit, it wouldn't stand a chance with the constant stream of negativity.
They'd do five hour smugfest streams where they'd laugh at it, and make really hideous, sexist remarks about how ugly and un****able they felt the new actress playing Buffy was. In fact they'd later do entire, obnoxious videos about how sex sells and how ugly this new Buffy was.
They'd also in a hilarious parallel to the feminists who go on about sad virgin manbabies, that this show was only liked by sad cat ladies who've never been touched. They'd also accuse the show of promoting Marxism (despite NONE of them having even the tiniest clue about what that is.)
Finally they'd say this proves that women will never like sci fi or fantasy series because when it bombed that would show that the market isn't there for female fans or even female led series, so let's not bother ever trying to do female led things. Let girls like pink shoes and unicorns and let men enjoy fantasy and sci fi. (They'd then rewrite the past to say that the original was not a big hit either.)
PLEASE do not put Buffy fandom through this shit. Let us enjoy it as it is.
