Ok so I just finished watching last Thursdays Smallville. What a rip off. The entire plot was the exact same (but aliens instead of demons of course) as Normal Again.

I was unimpressed

Anyone else see it?
 
FAir enough but not one Ive seen.

My point still stands though. It was so like it. Except he nearly stayed for Lana instead of his parents. They could have changed the story a little bit.
 
I seen the charmed Episode that Normal agian was apparently based off of and honestly at least they were different... but i agree this last episode of smallville was almost like t totally alike. It was crap
 
Smallville is usually crap anyway. Yet I have all five seasons on DVD. *sigh*

I guess I was just desperate for a new sci-fi show to watch when I got them, and at least the show has good production values. But Tom Welling's acting is unbelievably atrocious, and the writing will occasionally get so bad it reminds me of a thirteen-year-old girl's fan fiction.

The CW couldn't even make this episode look interesting by editing together an interesting trailer, which is sad. However, there HAVE been so pretty good episodes this season, I guess you have to deal with the awful episodes too...
 
I'd like to see the Charmed episode. Does anyone know what it is called? And when Buffy says that Normal Again is based off of the Charmed episode is that something that Joss or one of the Buffy writers confirmed? Or are they just similar episodes?

The idea behind Normal again isn't particularly original, what makes it good is it's delivery. The manner in which it is presented.

Here's the synopsis of Brain Drain.

Piper is chosen by the Source to give-up the Charmed Ones' powers by sending her dream self to an imaginary mental institution. Piper believes she is awake and tries to escape from the asylum but always fails as the Source is controlling her mind. Seeing that Leo is a doctor in the institution and that Phoebe and Paige are insane patients (not her sisters) in the mental hospital as well, Piper finally raises her white flag from fighting what she believes to be dementia. Her sisters in the real world must then try to find a way to wake Piper before she unknowingly gives in to the Source and relinquishes all of their powers.

Ah I have seen that one. Funny cos I didnt associate the two. Must have been different enough.
 
About the Charmed episode, I heard that Joss had the idea for Normal Again in his head and was going to film it and just then, the Charmed episode was aired so he put it off. So there was no stealing. However... the Charmed episode sucked, it was nothing special! Normal Again was much MUCH better.
 
Sooooo many science fiction and fantasy series have done the "hero wakes up to find it has all been a dream" storyline. Stargate Atlantis did it recently with Weir waking up to be told she had had a breakdown and imagined the whole Atlantis adventure. I bet if you look hard enough you could probably come up with a few dozen examples of the storyline in different series.

Buffy's Normal Again certainly wasn't the first series to do the story but of the ones I've seen it was definately the best. The Charmed version was poor, but that goes without saying.

The one that immediately jumps to mind is Wizard of OZ, but there's no doubt precedent for that too. Isn't there something in the Heracles myth about a drug induced hallucination causing him to murder his family, or something.

I think one of the distinctive things about Normal Again was that whole "maybe it's real" feel. Was that in the Smallville episode? It wasn't in the Charmed one.

I remember that it was Hera who drove Heracles mad which was what led him to murder his children but I don't recall that she used drugs to do so, although I'm sure there is more than one version to the myth, so I may be mythtaken. Sorry, had to say it! 😉

I haven't seen the Smallville episode but you are right in that there was never any sense of the false reality being the truth in the Charmed episode. You were always aware that it was merely Piper being messed with.
