How would you rank the Angel/Buffy gangs in terms of intelligence? Let's say top 5, but feel free to list more if you like.
I'd say:
1) Fred
2) Wes
3) Giles
4) Willow
5) Oz

I really think Wes is number two. I think he has an edge over Giles in that Wes is almost as equally well versed in the natual sciences as he is in the supernatural. Remember his dissection of a demon and his identifying the drug it was using in a season one episode? Plus he seemed to have an interest in dimensional physics in addition to his interest in Fred in season 4's "Supersymmetry".
 
I agree, Wesley is one of the smartest people there, including Fred. He's definitely proved that over the years.
 
wes is smart and has knowledge about everything...well,a lot of stuffs,...history,languages,demons,weapons,dimensions and portals,etc---anyway,he's the smartest imo...i dont have to say the reasons,nobody did
 
I really wanted to do this, but I can't. I think that all (maybe not all, but most) of the characters have their strengths in different kinds of intelligence.

Giles obviously has the most crystalized knowledge, but Xander and Tara are/were both amazingly perceptive when it came to people and feelings, and all the others had their asorted areas of "expertise".

So, to answer this, I have to ask "What kind of intelligence are you referring to?"

What about Buffy!

I mean, in my more egotistical moments I think I'm a low-grade supergenius (I also think I can fly and walk through walls, but I digress...) and I only scored a 1280 on my SATs. Buffy scored like a 1440, didn't she? People who score over 1400 on their SATs go to CalTech or MIT on scholarships and get doctoral degrees in obscure subjects that sound made-up, like "Theoretical Physics" or "Bio-Psychology".

Well, okay. SAT score aside, Buffy never actually evidenced a genius IQ. Here's my top 5:

1. Wesley
2. Willow (I think she's much more well-rounded in her education than Fred, so I gave her the number 2 spot)
3. Fred
4. Giles
5. Oz
 
I'm not talking 'bout emotional intelligence, more like who are the best problem solvers, without resorting to fisticuffs
 
Amen Kindred! I was just thinking the same thing! Where I feel that emotional intelligence is most important I will go with this book smarts theme just because it's different and fun! 😉
