When you're in love, everything seems different - and that includes your sense of smell. Women who are deeply in love struggle to recognise the body odour of male friends, but their ability to distinguish their partner's smell is unaffected.

Body odours are known to play a role in human sexual attraction. But how does falling in love affect our perception and processing of these smells?

To find out, Johan Lundström and Marilyn Jones-Gotman of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, asked a group of 20 young women with boyfriends to fill in a Passionate Love Scale questionnaire (pdf format) to determine just how much in love they were. Meanwhile, the women's partners and male and female friends slept for a seven nights in a cotton T-shirt with pads sewn into the underarms to soak up their sweat.

In a series of trials, each woman was asked to pick out their lover's or a friend's T-shirt from three garments, two of which had been worn by strangers. The women's scores on the Passionate Love Scale made no difference to their ability to recognise a lover's shirt, or that worn by a female friend. But those who were more deeply in love were less good at distinguishing a male friend's odour from those of strangers.

I assume that you're talking about natural body scent as opposed to brand of cologne, after shave, or deodorant.

Yes, natural body scent. It's strange how scents of male friends get 'downgraded' .. we truly are wondrous and strange animals.

Have I ever told you the whole smelling people thing? Kinda gross!

Interesting story, but I never noticed this phenonema, myself. Maybe I haven't been deeply in love? I tend to think I have, but I wonder what they qualify that as for the study? What constitutes "deeply in love?" It's subjective. And besides that, I didn't go around smelling people at the time, either. 😉

Yeah, but only 20 women? Not the widest of spreads, is it?

Speaking from experience, it can be VERY difficult to get people to participate in studies. Even if you offer extra credit for their English classes. Seriously. And this one sounds like it would be rather involved--getting shirts that belong to the participants' significant others and friends (cause the participant can't do it or it will skew the results), keeping them separate so the smells don't mix . . . blah. I'll stick with a personality inventory any day.

True, but knowing this, was there really ever any point to doing the thing?
I love smells. When I was with someone, I knew their smell so well, if I was an animal out in the wild, I could find them by their smell!!
Seriously though, one of the first things I'm attracted to from a guy is his smell, not his perfume, his natural body smell. Maybe I'm a weirdo though.

Hey! I knew this story already. Or maybe it was something similar, dunno.

It sounds like a fun experiment to set up though ^^

Maybe it's because I have a weak nose or something but I've never really noticed someone's smell. I certainly couldn't recognize someone by it.

I have a terrible sense of smell....but I have great eye sight. And in case you're now wondering, no, being in love doesn't make it more difficult to see and recognize my friends.

I find this an interesting topic. Normally I'm quite bad with my sense of smell, but I think sometimes I am able to recognise a scent of some people. Not very good at it, but if I remember a smell, I tend to be able to pick it out anywhere. This is sometimes good, other times it's quite annoying as it brings back stupid memories.
