Should Smoking be banned in public places?

I saw this on the news tonight and thought I'd raise the debate with you people. You always have something good to say about these things so here goes....

Should smoking be banned in public places? :jumping03
 
Im an ex smoker who doesnt per se like the smell of smoke however I think it depends on the situation. I hate that they ban smoking in bars. However in restaurants I am all for banning it.
 
Yes!! It definately should.....

I usually don't mind people smoking in public, most of my friends smoke around me and I'm fine. But I went out on Saturday night and I've got a hell of a cig burn on my left hand. It's really bad and its still killing!! I've had my fair share of cig burns but they usually stop hurting after awhile...this one hasn't.

The thing that gets me is that its usually the non smokers who get cig burns!!

So, my message to smokers is...if your going to walk around and dance with a cig in your hand then cup the damn thing so you burn yourself and not innocent by standers 😛
 
It's interesting that none of you have mentioned the fact that non-smokers are forced to breathe in second-hand smoke. And, don't you hate waking up the next morning smelling like an ashtray?

Most places up here your not allowed on the dance floor with either a drink or a cigarette.

As for me i'm a smoker, even as i'm typing this i'm smoking. I never smoke anywhere if there are people eating I do smoke in pubs and clubs when I have a drink but if i'm with non smokers i'll move away. If i'm in a friend's house even if they are a smoker i'll ask if its ok, if they are a non smoker I just won't do it. My mum smoked as a was growing up and I hated the smell and always complained about it. But one day I just started, my flatmate smoked and I took one of hers. I use candles in incense so my room doesn't smell, I make sure the smell isn't on me by using perfume and gum.

As for banning its one of those things that no one is going to be happy with, the non smokers don't see why they should breathe the smoke, which is understandable, and the smokers feel they are being discriminated against for not being able to smoke.

Like ProphecyGirl I think that in restaurants it should be banned, but there should be some pubs that do allow it so the smokers do have a place. I understand from Buffy Summers that there are a few places in NY that allow that. Unless I picked it up wrong. Funnily enough I had a similar conversation about this with Cordelia last week.
 
Yeah, a lot of places don't let you on the dance floor with a drink or that. Which I'm thankful for. And some pubs have non-smoking areas if they serve food. The only problem with that is that these areas aren't big enough and sometimes there's a problem getting a seat away from the smoke. I do agree that noone is going to be happy about this whatever happens though.

My problem is that my parents both smoked like chimneys and I was constantly ridiculed for smelling of smoke. That just broke my heart because I had no choice but to be around smokers.

Thats why I choose not to smoke in places where food is served. We have some pubs with no seats set for eating, so if I see food getting delievered i'll either put it out or if i've just lit it up go outside.
 
Yeah, but you are a very nice person who has consideration for others. Not everyone is like you. I wish they were because then there wouldn't be a problem. 😛
 
Well I was stood at the bus stop earlier with smoke being inhaled through my nose which angered me so atm I say ban it.

I think smoking should be banned in public places for three reasons that come to mind. 1) a lot of people hate the smell of smoke and shouldn't have to smell it. 2) people around the smoker can get really sick from breathing in the cigarette smoke all the time. people who don't smoke can get lung cancer from being around people who do. 3) some people are allergic to the smoke (my best friend is).

I'm against smoking in general because the people are slowly killing themselves and others.

It was about 8 people, and full of college, ie uncaring, people. Unless I went crazy and started ripping fags out of mouths people would of been like :shrug:
 
Have to agree with Faith. It's nice for non-somkers to not have to have second-hand smoke. Epischly when tere eating.
I have no prob. if you somke at pubs or clubs. But if it's at a place were a lot of kids are at. I think you should not make the little kids have to breathe second-hand smoke. And when your eating at a restaurant. I don't think you should be aloud to smoke then. And not in a crowded place cuz then someone might get burned.

We can't expect the government to step in and ban something because various people are too meek to say something. I don't think profanity is banned in public. Are we gonna have them ban that as well?
 
I must admit i'm guilty of smoking at bus stops but again I stay away from people, not just non smokers but other smokers to. I have this thing about standing in crowds, I like to be on my own.

Profanity and smoking are two different things, nobodys died through second-hand profanity.

Although that being said, I am always careful what I say when near kids on the bus/train or something. Im a good boy.

Normally I would say that if someone wants to do something then it is their choice. But in the situation of second hand smoke its different. Would I like the choice to smoke yes, will I still smoke yes. Will I do my best to make sure others don't inhale my smoke, yes.
 
Let's not be pointlessly over dramatic. :trippy: I very much doubt that people have died from secondhand smoke they inhaled only at a bus stop.

If you read some of the studies (and I have for class) then in most cases its people who live with smokers, not people who were just out and about and inhaled a bit of smoke.

We might as well ban hamburgers because they have fat and cause heart attacks. However just one doesnt kill you.

At a bus stop it's more an annoyance than a threat to life. the same as profanity and both can be stopped if you simply ask.
 
Bus Stops I think a fine to Smoke at. As long as your not near kids. I think what ever you chouse do to do it. But be carefully around Kids. Bouth by what you say and do.
I have a few friends that Smoke and I do not mind. But when thay Somke in front of kids then I get mad. You should not make kids have to breathe your second-hand smoke. Same with swereing. I Swer but not in frount of kids I just think you shoundn't....
