Should Smoking be banned in public places?

Its more of the long term status, if you spend a lot of time round smokers like you say, be it at home, in pubs, clubs etc. Not sure if you can compare it to hamburgers because if you eat one infront of someone it doesn't effect them at all.

But I do agree with your point on asking people saying you don't like inhaling their smoke.

Here in ireland they banned smoking in workplaces(pubs, restaurants, basically where any one works) in Marc 04 so it think it's a good idea. Although i do think there should be closed of smoking areas in pubs/bars at least

Hmm Challenge? Eating a hamburger in front of someone once has just as much damage as smoking in front of someone once. I can stretch it so far as to say that most likely that person will go buy a hamburger. Have you ever been on the bus and someone bring food on there? fills the place up and you can smell it and more than likely youre off to buy a hamburger.

Does that one hamburger kill you? no. If someone is standing at a bus stop and inhales one cigarette.

Does that one cigarette kill you? no.

But it would be your choice to go and buy the 'hamburger' then. Thats the difference.

Its not really just the one bus stop situation we're talking about here, it was brought up in conversation, but on the bigger picture, say you smoke once infront of them, and so do several others and so forth. I do see the point behind your hamburger comparison I just don't think you can compare the two.

lol check out the ex smoker and the smoker arguing the case here 😉

Heh yeah Im just arguing for sake of argument. I can argue any issue and any side. It's what I do.

I was actually just talking to my friend about how icky smoking is especially how icky it is to kiss smokers.

However I really don't like the idea of government stepping in and banning this and that. :trippy:

I don't like backing down on an argument, its a flaw. Even if I know i'm wrong I won't back down.that shows weakness.

The principal of the banning I get, its getting to be the case that our lives are getting more and more restricted by regulations enforced on us by the government but like everything else people will get round it.

Well here in Dallas it's banned everywhere unless the restaurant/bar has some type of very expensive ventilation system.

The way they get around that in bars is that if we smoke we get the ticket, they don't. So everyone still smokes and people rarely get a ticket.

However, I don't think people should have to "get around" this law. It's smokers choice to smoke. It's non smokers choice to not go to bars where smokers are.

Are you referring to a normal bar that allows smoking? Currently here all pubs and clubs that I know allow it. So why should non smokers be restricted in where they want to go because smokers are there? And the other side may argue (and its not my own views) is that why should they not go to a certain bar just because non smokers are?

Really we're going round in circles coming back to the same points.

Well we are talking two different sides of the world. Many, many, many bars here and as I recall many major cities (NYk, LA) don't allow it.

And Why should smokers leave? We keep going back to the point of its harmful to non smokers. If its truly that harmful would people even dare put themself in that situation? However I only see nonsmokers whinning about it but not choosing to go somewhere else. But anyway I'm done with the argument. I'm more right than anyone else here anyway. 😀

Keep on thinking that 😉

We should let others have their say instead of filling up the thread with our posts 😀

I say ban smoking in general. Both my parents have been smoking for 30 years, and I always smell like smoke, and I knock over a full ashtray(every once and a while) and it lands all over my clothes, and I hate the smell, and I think that people are stupid if they smoke. Smoking in public places should be banned for everyones sake. They won't smell like crap, and they won't want to try smoking, because they breath in the smoke.

I don't think the hamburger comparison is all that relevant. I can see how it would make you want to go and get one but I don't believe it would have the same effect on you as passive-smoking. And you have the "choice" to go and buy the hamburger, you don't have the choice about breathing in someone else's smoke. I wouldn't anyway because I don't like hamburgers but that's just me. As for dying after inhaling one person's smoke... no... I don't believe that could happen. But there is more than one smoker in the world that people encounter in their lifetime. And what about the people who are illergic or asthmatic?

Thats mostly what I said too
Wow you guys have been busy on this issue.

Ok as a smoker, here's my opinion:

I'm ok with not being able to smoke at a table in a restaurant...however if that restaurant has a separate bar section, it should be allowed. I am totally against the banning of smoking in bars/clubs because of the fact that smoking and drinking for a lot of people (even those who consider themselves non smokers) go hand in hand.

I went to a Yankee game about 2 weeks ago or so and I think it's so ridiculous that an open air stadium doesn't allow smoking anywhere!!!

Might I point out again that you DO have the choice? I remember being 12 at the fair and this older man was smoking near us and I asked him to stop and he did. I also recall the other day (funnily enough) being at the bus stop and asking someone to stop or move farther away and they did.

You have no choice when you choose to not have a choice. heh.

I'm the only one who has voted No in this question.. Not cause I smoke.. And I don't think it should be allowed everywhere.. Just not "Banned from Public Places" in general..

Health and Safety? To decrease the risk of fires in bins etc? Thats just my guesses. Personally I wouldn't want to smoke their i'd be too interested in the game and keeping an eye on Jeter. Yes rub it in that you went to the game 😛

Ok..if you insist...I was sitting on the third base line..had a great view of the shortstop...mmm tight baseball pants....

Yeah I mean I wouldn't smoke at my seat, but somewhere in the stadium there should be a smoking section...my b/f and I were dying!!

You sure know how to kick a girl when she's down!

I never gave it much thought but when i've been to football games here there is no smoking either. They don't allow any bottles or cans in either but thats just to stop you throwing them at each other and on the pitch.
