Personally I love the ban. I smoke the occasional fag but since Ireland brought in the ban a few years ago I couldn't imagine going back. It is just an absolute joy to go a pub or a restaurant or anywhere for that matter and not have to deal with your eyes burning and your chest constricting cuz of the excess smoke.

The thing with these bans is that I have no idea anymore where smoking is banned and where not. And I'm not the only onme, a lot of Germans are really confused. First off, germany consits of 16 states, kinda like America, and every one of these states makes up its own smoking laws. So it depends on where you are.
Then, they're changing the laws so fast a lot of people don't know what they're allowed to do and what not. They showed thsis on TV the other day, some people pretended to be police officers and stopped people that were smoking on an open street and gave them fees for smoking. Smoking on open streets isn't actually forbiden anywhere but most people didn't seem to know that, because all except for one guy actually payed these fake officers. I think this says a lot about all the new banning of smoking.

A couple of clarifications:

1. My friend that I liked was also pretty heavily buzzed at the time. When she sobered up, she didn't want to make out any more. And that didn't surprise me a tremendous amount. So you could pretend I was being gallant... but I'd have totally done it if she hadn't had a deathstick in her mouth at the time.

2. The problem I have with smoking bans is not when they prohibit smoking in public area (parks) or buildings (libraries.) My problem is that the owner of the land on which the private business resides should have jurisdiction over whether the building is smoking or not. Owner differentiation works great for rental houses/apartments. But once you start attempting to make a profit, your ability to make your own decisions is suddenly repealed.

Don't smoke and never have. Never will either. Apart from the obvious health issues, I just hate the idea of being addicted to anything. I generally hate anything having any control over me whatsoever so I'm sure as hell not going to start putting something into my body that will have that effect.

I actually know very few people who smoke these days. The last few girlfriends I've had have all been non-smokers and apart from my sister and her husband my family and friends are all non-smokers too. At least the ones I see regularly. Thankfully it seems like a habit that society is heading towards kicking.

Hey! Long time no see!
I tried it when I first started secondary school, because at the time I thought it was 'cool' and I smoked for a little while but it just didn't do anything for me at all, was a waste of money and tasted horrible - luckily I wasn't addicted and could quit straight away. I've been exposed to second hand smoke since I was born pretty much, there is actually a picture of my Mum holding me in one arm when I was a few weeks old, and a cigarette in the other hand... I don't really get annoyed about them smoking while I'm there because I'm used to it, but if they smoke around my nephews I go mad because why should they be exposed to second hand smoke?

I'm a smoker and have been since the week before my 18th birthday (a late bloomer you might say). But I'm not a chain smoker and often go a few days at a time without a ciggie. As I live in West Australia we also abide by the new smoking laws so there's no longer any smoking inside - this isn't a big deal for me though as I was never much of an indoor smoker (except in clubs) so it's not such a drama. But a number of my friends feel like they are being villified for smoking and refuse to go out anymore which is extremely frustrating! I appreciate the need to limit second hand smoke, but I feel that the speed that the new laws were introduced did not leave adequate time for venues to create spaces outdoors for smokers (so that I don't have to wait in line everytime I want to go out and have a puff!). But yeh, i'm a regular smoker for the moment. I have to quit in 2 months to nanny though, so soon I'll probably love the no-smoking inside laws!
