What are your thoughts on smoking in public/smoking ban?

In Scotland we've had the smoking ban for a while now, pretty depressing if you're a smoker 'cause the weather is shit here and you have to stand outside huddled together like rodents trying to have a smoke..

What do you all think? EH??

As a non smoker, I think it's nice.
It is annoying and really icky to smell the smoke of smokers. I am happy about it.

Smokers of course thinks it's annoying, but it is a health issue.
I don't feel getting sick from smoke I didn't even smoke

Hmm, when you were allowed to smoke in clubs all you could smell was beer and smoke. Now you just smell BO....:lol2:

I don't smoke btw, don't really care about the smoking ban one way or the other.

I don't think making you stand outside in the rain gives me any incentive to quit smoking, it makes me ragin', like I remember once when I was standing smoking outside a pub in Glasgow, the bouncer said to me (I hadn't even finished my ciggarette yet), "make sure you put your fag out in the ashtray provided", I know he was just trying to do his job, but it made me boil over with rage, so I put the ciggarette out in my hand, and smiled at him and walked back in the pub..it made me feel slightly better.

It's good, smelling smoke makes me cough and tear with my lenses and it makes you stink to cigarettes. It's here too, just that when I go to party, I still smell to cigarettes, it isn't like they keep themself to the law. But it's good, 'cause now it's at least clear that it's annoying to some persons.

Edit: I think smoking should just be against the law in total. I don't say my grandmother died of it, but it was sure not a help with all her drinking & smoking.

Also many pubs are dead now in my area and they can stink because their no smoke masking body odour.

Not a fan of the smoking ban. First of all, at least in clubs or pubs, well, places with alcohol, there should be smoking allowed. Smoking and drinking just belong together for me! People often complain about stinky clothes, but I actually don't really mind cigarette smell on my clothes.
Here it's also getting colder and really rainy so to go stand outside for smoking gets pretty bad if you're wearing light clubbing clothes.
I think this is part of what makes us stay in more often, at least in our own house we can smoke freely.

I thought it was a really good idea. As a none smoker myself i couldn't stand the smell,and how it clung to my clothes. I think in the long run the people will see the benefits especially if it means they give up themselves. But i don't think people should be banned from smoking in their cars (which has been talked about recently) because its their own space and choice. Plus it doesn't really affect other people.

Not a smoker, never have been BUT there are SO many reasons why I dislike the smoking ban.

1) Most of my friends smoke so when one decides they want one, they ALL go which leaves me and the retard I don't know looking after the table making pointless conversation.

2) The stench. Bars have sweaty, vomity, stale alcoholy odours that smoke covered. Once you get used to the smell of smoke, you can ignore it BUT because sweat always smells different, as does vomit, these smells are constant.

3) Its a matter of freedom too.
OK, some establishments should be non-smoking for people who want to be in a non-smoking environment BUT there should be premises that are smoking.

"passive smoking" is a bunch of bull. Walking down teh street I am much more affected by exaught fumes than somebody walking past me smoking.

I can't stand stupidity, you don't see me petitioning that stupid people are taken out and shot. Stupidity being one in a long list of things that I am subjected to day after day, that do have more adverse affects to my health than some guy smoking near me for two seconds.

I am a smoker, but i can't say i'm affected one way or the other, it's my friends opinions that matter, if they don't want me to smoke around them, i won't. But random people in the pub, i could care less. But a lot of pubs in Ireland have beer gardens, so you're still in a pub but outside as well, which is sweet.

There's a bit of a difference between passing a car's exhaust fumes in the street, and sitting in a restraunt/bar/club for hours with people smoking. That example makes no sense. I'd rather sit next to a stupid person than have someone blowing smoke all around me all night.

I was excited when it happened here in US for our state. I hated going out to restaurants and not being able to enjoy my overpriced dinner because I was choking on someone's smoke inevitably wafting my way.

However, I do find some issue with the people not being allowed to do their own thing. Sure, I have a right to have clean air, but the person who smokes also has a right to be able to go out as well.

So, I was torn on it. I am happy now that I can enjoy my dinner, but there is still that flipside.

Im trying not to talk on this thread because the situation in the UK is pathetic and makes me angry.

I still cant believe they are thinking about stopping us smoking in our cars who the F**k do they think they are.

Smoking bans are becoming more common.
I no longer give patronage to any place that has a ban, including restaurants.

If more smokers took this attitude there would be a wake up call on loss of business to these establishments rather than passively accepting their restrictions.
Money always talks loudly. In establishments that previously did not have bans this would be especially loud.

Luckily (or not since it was a conscious choice) I completely abandoned the idea of living in California which is a smoking ban mecca.

I go with the idea that since the smoker's right infringes on my right to clean air and good health, their right has to be the one that is restricted. It's the only way that I can see this kind of situation being freely resolved. Health before luxury. Pollution though...that one's more tricky.

We have got that smoking ban for awhile here in Sweden too.

I don't smoke, but I haven't been bothered when others did.
So I didn't really care about the issue.
Agree with BotD in one thing, it is boring when all of you smoking friends disappear from time to time.

On the plus side, it is quite nice not to be all smelly everytime you have been out...

I dunno, When I was a smoker I always kind of liked nicking off outside for a durry with a couple of mates. Some of the best conversations i've ever had have taken place in the gutter outside a resturaunt in which i couldn't smoke.
