So, am I the only one who liked the Anointed One?

I'm watching Buffy for the first time through and I just finished "School Hard." It was a great episode, but I hated the ending. I liked the Anointed One, child villains are really cool if they are done right and besides the kid who played him actually seemed to be able to act which is rare. I wish they had kept him as the main villain instead of Spike, does anyone agree?

I don't want to get too specific on plot lines because I don't want to spoil the season for you, but keep watching. For starters, Spike is freaking fantastic. And don't worry, the climax of S2 is probably the best of any T.V. series I've ever watched, and once it happens, trust me, you won't even remember the Anointed One.

But as for the kid himself, I thought he was alright. I didn't really think he was anything special, but I thought the actor who played him did a good job. He had that creepy feel down pat. I was a thrown when he fries though. I mean, they had built him up as this major player throughout most of S1, and then...nothing. I've always kind of wondered why that happened. My guess is either fan reaction to him was poor or the kid himself was getting too old to play the part (wouldn't be the first time that's happened).

Either way, I wasn't broken up when he died. And I have to say, I loved his death. Spike owns that episode, at his finished it perfectly 🙂.

First, Spike is awesome. He beats the Annointed One any day. That last scene you hate is one of my favourite, actually.

Next, there were logistic reasons the Annointed One had to be scrapped. Child actors grow up quick, so a child vamp wasn't really practical.

Last, I'm a fan of the creepy child trope, so I liked the idea, but I didn't feel any regret/sadness that Spike took over.

Noooo, I never got why the annoying, oh sorry, the anointed one was part of the show. He was uninteresting and pointless to the story in my opinion. Spike taking over was really, really for the best.

But one thing I like about BB is that there are so many different opinions here, it's fun to hear why people like something you don't. 🙂

This was my main problem. I didn't really "dislike" the Annointed One, but I don't really understand what his purpose/power was.

I heard somewhere (Not sure where or if it is true) that joss had big plans for the anointed one, but forgot about this fact! 😛 I'm sure he could have gotten around it somehow, but I love seeing Spike kill him, so I'm not complaining.

But overall, I didn't dislike the anointed one, just didn't see the point in him. If it was trut that Joss had plans for him, I would love to know what they were.

Truth is, I never cared that much about The Anointed One. I mean, he adds to the story and that's about it. I like how Spike makes fun of him and calls him 'The Annoying One' though and it's cool how Spike kills him. Oh, and he also confused me, because at one point I thought that Billy from Nightmares and The Anointed One were the same person 😱 haha 😀

But there's one thing about him that's weird. Isn't he supposed to be, like, incredibly strong or something? I wish they would have shown it somehow. That little guy didn't do anything to gain his vampire-minions' respect. They just did what he told them to do. And then Spike comes along, grabs him and puts him in that cage and that's it?

Okay, I'll admit it: Spike is freaking awesome. I still wish we could have seen the Anointed One show us what makes him so powerful, but Spike's greatness is making up for it. I love watching Spike and Angel argue, though I do keep hoping Spike will get out of that chair beat and Angel. Yeah, I've never been a huge Angel fan, though his evil self is so evil it's funny to watch.

I think that the Anointed One was one of those ideas that Joss had that just didn't work out the way that he wanted it to. If the kid could have pulled off playing a really sinister, evil character, it could have been a great arc. Unfortunately, he was just too young and innocent looking to be a convincing monster, so he was basically nothing but a walk on for a few scenes while somebody else, primarily the Master and Spike, played the actual Big Bad.

(Too bad Joss couldn't have used our neighbor's son. That kid is evil personified)

I liked the idea of the creepy child villain, but after the Prophecy of 'the Annointed shall lead the Slayer into Hell yada, yada, yada, there wasn't much point to him. He did his job, the Slayer died, then she came back and kicked butt. Which left him as a small boy with an army of lackeys. That is quite creepy in and of itself, but possibly not in the way Joss intended. 🙂 It does leave me with a question, though....

Couldn't agree more. It was really as if they originally planned for him to be the big bad, and then decided against it early on in the season

I used to work in a video store and this little kid who talked and behaved like an 80 year old man used to come in all the time - we named him the anointed one 😉
Anyway, back on topic, the way Spike dealt to that kid was awesome, unexpected and really set the tone for Spike in general. Great stuff.
