So crosses are kind of useless aren't they?

I've noticed that like half the time vampires just ignore crosses. I thought they were supposed to repel them somehow, but it looks like they just burn and frighten them, both of which can be ignored.
 
At the start of the show, all vampires would move back at even the sight of a tiny cross, but by the end of season 7 the writers just lazily worked around it when they needed to. I too, noticed it, but it never really bothered me.
 
Well, they certainly seem to be the least useful out of all the weapons and tools Buffy uses against vamps. In S1 and S2 they use them quite often, but past that the crosses just kind of fade into the background. Angelus always seems to be particularly wary of them though.

Post S3 however, it's all about stakes and the sun.
 
Crosses burn them, so they shy away from pain. It's best demonstrated in S1, when The Master talks to The Annointed One about fear, and he touches the cross.
 
Thinking about it a little more, I think that crosses were largely phased out, or at least pushed to the background, of the show because the cross as we know it is inherently religious. It's pretty much the quintessential symbol of faith and religion.

Buffy and Angel have always steered clear of religion in their episodes and seasons (which I'm thankful for, big time). The Master had some pretty strong religious undertones to him but beyond that, they didn't mix with religion much at all, if ever. Crosses don't really mesh with that direction.

I think that crosses were used less and less because they get in the way. The vamps recoil then come from a different angle, so they aren't really necessary. And later on they are just ignored. When Supernatural first started
Sam and Dean would be shown infiltrating peoples' homes by impersonating police officers, agents etc and we'd see the comedy scene where they assume the names of famous rock musician
Now they don't bother more than once or twice a season just to pay homage. It's the same with crosses and is just an evolution of the programme and speeding up of the storytelling process for those people who are already familiar with the show and by the time seasons 6 and 7 came around they probably weren't getting too many new viewers.
 
I always thought the crosses were just used mainly as a distraction to the enemy so that the victim can run or get ready to fight. It seems to me the most experienced vampires know that half the time they are useless, but the less experienced tend to get well.....burnt. I think their just part of the vampire fighting culture really, it doesn't matter if their used or not.
