This has been trending in the UK, celebrities have commented on Twitter, and it's been in the papers, and now I want to hear what you guys have to say.

A bit of background, Samantha Brick is a UK part-time journalist living in France, who recently has written an article claiming that her attractiveness has definite downsides and that other women dislike attractive women, out of jealousy and bitterness.

Here are the articles:
There are Downsides to Looking this Pretty: Why Women Hate me for Being Beautiful

In the fallout from the article, she was accused of being arrogant and narcissistic, yet claimed that the reception to her article was 50:50, with some women writing and congratulating her on writing an article that was so true to their lives.

Samantha went on to say that all the backlash she had, saying she was delusional and wrong to say she was attractice, just proved her right, and that women hate other attractive women.

The backlash just proves I'm right.

She was then interviewed on UK tv show defending her point:
Samantha Brick defends herself in an Interview

Thoughts?
Opinions?
I just thought it was worth mentioning, since it's cooked up such a storm over here!

Well... I could see how she used to be hot when she was younger... 😛

Still the 50:50 reaction is about right. She's generalizing. Of course there are tons of chicks out there who get jealous and bitter over attractive women (only when they are successful - that is). And others just appreciate and compliment beauty and attractiveness.

I personally don't think her "attractiveness" has downsides, only her fame.

Lol, wow one really can get 'famous' for anything these days. Honestly I just think she comes across as a rather insecure woman with an inflated narcissistic attitude... I guess she's cute but the fact that she's reading her so-called attractiveness into people's reactions or dislikes about her is just... well, let's just say it says more about her than the women she's accusing of being jealous...

I don't usually consider the Daily Mail a serious and reliable source of information 😛 Anyway I think that she's a narcissist, I totally agree with Taake's last sentence! 🙂

This kind of news story is what the Mail does best. The Twitterstorm became boring about half an hour in, imo.

It's one thing to think that some people are being hurtful out of jealousy and another to voice it in such a vain and narcissistic manner. But of course, people like reading inflammatory things like this to rip it (and her) to pieces on places like Twitter, which means lots of hits on the Mail's website. Some of the vitriol has been uncalled for, but at the same time you can't write something like that in that tone and not expect a bad response.

hahaha - is it more than a little ironic that i'm listening to marilyn manson's "the beautiful people" while reading this?

Anyway, I think this whole 'they hate me because I'm beautiful' thing definitely rings of insecurity masked over with arrogance, yes... however....

I do believe that there is a serious issue here and that is the pervasive tendency women have to see one another as the enemy.... as competition.....I've been doing a lot of personal work around this - to be free of it - and it's not easy... it happens almost automatically.... walk into a room, sizing up the other women.... gauging who's "prettier" and what not. I really hate this whole phenomenon. I would love to be filled with a feeling of sisterhood and solidarity rather than the competitive and jealousy that seems to divide rather than unite.

I think this is a sad statement about society as a whole and I think it's up to us women to change it.

I can see what she means many women and even men can be threatened by strikingly beautiful women. I think thats more personal insecurities than someone's good looks. Not to be a bitca but IMO she is not one of the most beautiful people I've ever seen. Yes she makes the most of herself but she's a far cry from what I'd call truly beautiful. I always view beauty as someone you could take all the make up off of and shave their head bald and they would still look a million dollars. But that's just me.

I saw a documentary made by a (woman) sociologist on how women are portrayed on italian tv and I remember that she said "I often wonder why us women look at each other with a man's eyes." Maybe it's not relevant but it's a quote that came to my mind as soon as I read this 🙂

totally relevant!!!
I rather enjoyed Tim Dowlings response to this, where he laments the pitfalls of being too, too handsome. Very tongue and cheek.

(I'm on my phone so I can't post the full text, but the link takes you to a Gaurdian article)

This is probably going to make me sound bitter and jealous, but so be it 🙂

I watched a TV show last night called Gold Digger and Proud and it shows women who use their looks to get things for free, just like Samantha in this article, even though she says she did nothing to make the men buy her these things, she doesnt say that she didnt accept them. I just would not feel comfortable accepting gifts from people I dont know and women that do just confuse me. The show followed 2 women who went on a night out, they got into the club for free, got all their drinks paid for and even got money for their taxi home!

Um, she could have made a valid point about how women treat each other without putting herself up as the victim. Only shows off her hideous arrogant personality.

Exactly, there are better ways of putting across an argument than that

Wow, talk about being up your own ass. "I'm so pretty, everyone must hate me for it!" *duckface*. I don't know who told her she's atractive, because she isn't. Clearly delusional and narcisistic as everyone said.

Well said, my thoughts exactly.
