So was the story ever told about what happened AFTER the series finale? Are Angel, Spike, Gunn, and Illyria still alive, or were they all killed? Just wondering if, like "Buffy Season 8", the story was continued in some other media. If so, where? Thanks.

Not really. I think it was up to the audience and fanfic to decide what happens next. I have heard on Angel comics, but I have seen the entire series so I have shyed away.

Just what I was thinking!
IDW is saying they'll be coming out with what they've been referring to as a canon Angel Season 6. Apparently Joss says it in Buffy magazine also, but I never saw it.

Angel Season 6

Amy Acker claims Gunn was originally going to come back as a vampire.

Amy Acker Interview

Joss Whedon said on at least 3 occasions before that Gunn is dead, but we were never sure if he was joking.

Yeah, I've only heard that Joss has referred to Gunn at being dead. I believe in one of the interviews or commentary on the Angel season five set, he is talking about the characters and says something like Gunn is about to die or is dying.

I haven't heard anything else about any other characters though.

Joss joked about the end, something like Gunn died, Angel loses an arm, Spike shanshus and Xander loses the other eye (the xander bit is the tip-off that it was said in jest). I've read an interview with the guy who wrote Spike: Assylum comic and he has been in talks with Joss about what will happen in the season six comic - So far all we know is that no Slayers turn up to save them.

OK, here's the three quotes from Joss concerning Gunn's death the way I heard them. First from an old thread...

Reportedly Joss also said this at a convention in San Deigo -

"I don't consider the finale to be quite as open as some people have said," Joss confessed. "Let's see, Gunn definitely dies, and many things are possible. I don't intend to continue the series, I think that the series is over but like I said we're talking about TV movies, we're talking about different venues. I would like to see what happens to those characters in some format we just haven't had a go on what that happens to be yet. But trying to bring back the series I think that it's sort of beyond that now."

Later there was another reported remark from the Kerry fundraiser -

"He was asked again about the Ats cliffhanger and he repeated that the message was that you have to keep fighting…
But he went ahead and said (I think he was being flippant):
Gunn dies (groans in the background…I think J August Richards was there)"

Then a member here at BB (Xander) posted this...

There is a quote by Joss (in SFX I think) about Gunn. He said, about what happened after NFA:

Gunn dies, so does Illyria and Spike, Angel's arm is cut off and Xander loses another eye, which is funny because he wasn't even there.

I'd take that with a pinch of joking salt.

This all came from this thread in 2005.

https://buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?t=20292&highlight=gunn.

Some time after that came the Amy Acker quote saying Gunn was going to be vamped if they'd done the proposed made for DVD movies.

I think it's funny that basically EVERYBODY in the Angel camp is either dead or has died. I mean Doyle is dead, Cordelia is dead, Fred is dead, Wesley is dead, Gunn is more than likely dead, Angel is undead, and Spike is undead. They just killed off the entire show cast lol, but you look at Buffy basically everybody lived to fight another day.

The only definite thing about the proposed Angel Season 6 is that, to be called that, Angel must survive. Beyond that, it's all in the hands of Fate and the mind of Joss. Certainly, there would be a pretty large uproar among the fans id Spike doesn't survive, and most of us would miss Illyria. The bottom line, however, is that Mr Joss Whedon is a sadistic man who enjoys stirring up the emotions of his fans.

Dead as in what?

Vampire? Or dead, dead?

How cool would it have been if he came back from the senators office a vamp.

who thinks joss was cruel for the way he ended season 5? i was like WHAT THE HELL???????/ WHAT HAPPENED? ii think there might be a season 6 of angel not a comic a show because that was a damn mean cliffhanger to keep us on i can dream aboput angel season 6 can't i?

I don't know if this would be classified as a spoiler, or not, but there is this...

Although Acker didn't go into details about the difference in approaches between Fox and Whedon, the actress did give away some vital information as to what the plot could have been had they gone ahead or had there been a sixth season.

"I think it's okay to say this now, since its not happening, but I think J (who plays Charles Gunn) was to be evil in it." she said. "He was to become a vampire really early on in this really big battle."

Actor J August Richards, who was also at the event, quickly confirmed that was the direction he always pictured character going.

"I'd probably have him come back as a vampire and then kill himself." Added Richards. "That's always how I wanted it to end for my character."
