Forgive me if this has been estabilished already. But who WAS called when Buffy died in Season 5?

I mean sure Faith was still around, but it's not like The Powers That Be can just go 'Ah well they've still got her, despite the fact she's in jail and all.'. I mean they don't really have an opinion do they?

It's just automatic the proccess of calling a Slayer isn't it?. And we KNOW that they didn't screw everything up (despite the Beljoxors Eye claiming they did so but he meant in an other way) and therefore halting the proccess. As Faith was still called when Kendra was killed and Buffy was still alive.::huh1::

Sorry if I've overlooked something here, but I just d'no!

The official answer is that no one was called. When Buffy died the first time and Kendra was called, Kendra became THE Slayer, and the line passed from her to Faith. So only Faith's death would activate a new Slayer.

Of course, even Joss forgot that from time to time.

I think it's been mentioned somewhere before that according to the original Chosen script, Buffy says she thinks probably her and Faith with BOTH have to die before a new one was called.

However, I'm ALL FOR a third slayer.

Technically Fray in Season 8?

for that to make sense, faith would never have been called. Buffy (a 2nd time) and Kendra would both have to die for Faith to be called.

Most logical is Buffy dies, kendra takes the line. Kendra dies Faith takes the line. Buffy loses the line, shes an anomaly. Faith dies (theoretically) then another is called.

All the times that others (potentials) say "if buffy dies, then i could be next" is more about them misunderstanding the fact that Buffy does not hold the slayer line. Buffy herself never makes this assumption.

Ive heard this argument a few times, and this is the ONLY way in which it can be resolved without flaws. Correct me if im wrong.

I'm not saying it makes sense. I'm saying that's what was in the Original Chosen Script.

Take into account that Beljoxas Eye says that Buffy being alive has somehow changed things.

The First evil ys in one episode that first the potentials must die, then Faith then Buffy.

If Buffy no longer has the line then there is no need to keep her alive.

Unless she either shares the line with Faith OR Buffy is the next person to receive the line after Faiths death.

WHY am I getting involved in this discussion again.

BYEEEE

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I thought happened. Buffy died, Kendra was called. Kendra died, Faith was called. At this point, the Slayer line is running through Faith, right? Buffy dies again....the line's still running through Faith, so no new Slayer was called to fill her place. When she was resurrected in Bargaining, the line reverted BACK to Buffy and was again running through her....hence the Potentials' reasoning that any one of them could be next if Buffy dies. Isn't that what happened?

I'd have to say no! The Potentials didn't know about Faith, assumed that Buffy was the ONE but either Faith has the line or their just not following their own mythology.

lol.

Are you suggesting that their are two lines of slayers then? Because this IS what you and the writers suggest with Bijoxeiwhatevers eye. The major problem with this is the fact that the slayer has existed for thousands of years, to suggest that the slayer has never died partially/been reincarnated by magic/had her heart stop once/ been drowned and recovered in this line of work sounds absolutely absurd to me.

Or maybe their are 20 different slayer lines at this point in history which would be the case if slayer lines 'multiplied'. Of course we know for a fact this isnt true from comments made by the watchers council and the whole notion of a 'chosen ONE'.

...At the end of the day, the writers are stupid and fans know the show better than anyone(ive said this many times) and the only realistic answer is the slayer line flows through faith.

I am not going to answer you, not because I don't think you deserve a come back from me, but I have been involved in this discussion at least 10 times on this board and refuse to get drawn in again!

Accept, of course, that it's not OUR story, it's Joss and the writers' and in their story, what THEY say goes, despite how much you want to rewrite it.

In the not so very long time I've been on these boards there have been several threads in which this was discussed. I think the general consensus on this is what Silum already said, the problem being the potentials saying (or thinking) they will be next after Buffy's death, and the First leaving Buffy for last.
With the potentials it's not that hard or unlogical to assume they're not really up to date, since Buffy was definitely acting like she was THE Slayer, and most of them wouldn't win a prize for their intelligence anyway. And I think if the line was by season 7 running through Faith, the First would still save Buffy for last, because a) after killing off all the potentials it wouldn't really matter which of the actual Slayers he killed first, and b) She was after all not only (probably) the strongest but also the most serious slayer, what with Faith and her shady past and all.
The Slayer line going back into Buffy seems a bit silly, but hell, everything in that universe is silly so it's also possible.
But one way or the other, there was no potential called with Buffy's second death because at the time of her dying the Slayer line (almost certainly) was not with her, but with Faith.

It's her show - Obviously kill her last. The line goes to Faith but the responsability was still Buffy's, including training the potentials which became the first's undoing.

I thought about ignoring this comment but pfft, ive got nothing better to do and your so unbelievably wrong that it deserved a response.

If you really believe this, then PLEASE explain flawlessly how Buffy can die and have kendra become slayer, then have Buffy die again and have noone come back, and then have the slayer line still be with Buffy... all while tieing togther the fact Faith has replaced Kendra clearly indicating the slayer line exists within her. Yet having two slayer lines is silly in the context of history and dialog provided by the watchers council.

Did I SAY it was our story? Or did I say we know the show better than the writers? I dont OWN the story but I certainly OWN its interpretation, especially if something is a mistake and I find the solution to it.

I await your perfect explanation of how the writers are always right, how Joss can do no wrong, and that we're mere slaves to pupper theatre...drones to the moving pictures of which we have no control.

I've never heard the argument that the Slayer line reverted to Buffy when she was resurrected in Bargaining. I'm not sure why it would.

I seem to remember one theory suggesting that the re-incarnation brung Buffy back as her former self before both of her deaths. Like she was born again or something. I'm going off memory here.

So the line is through Faith and then re-incarnation and the line runs through both of them so both need to be killed.

Another theory that ties in with that is about how The First was going to end the line. It is that the Slayers are in a set line of who will be called it was predetermined the line would pass Buffy, Kendra, Faith. Slayers have there place in the timeline and once it passes it is over for them. Once the line passed from Buffy to Kendra to Faith it still seemed normal. However with the reincarnation making Buffy THE slayer again with Faith, it messed the line up and by killing all potentials Faith there would be no next potential to pass the line and then killing Buffy the line could not be passed to Kendra who was next in line to Buffy. Thus ending the slayer line.

Thats probably not gonna make all much sense, Im tired its 1:43am but I'll read through again and try and explain it better if need be another time.

Anyway, I love hearing all the different theories on it, it's interesting to see what other fans think.

I've always taken it as Buffy died, Kendra was called, Kendra dies Faith is called. So at this point we have two slayers but the actual line is running through Faith. Then Buffy dies, no new slayer as Faith has the line.

But Willows spell changed all that, when she resurrected Buffy she put Buffy back into the line, think about it she wasn't just restarting Buffy's hart, she was pulling back her soul and basically creating a new Buffy by having to rebuild tissue and flesh, the spell also pulls the line back from Faith to Buffy. So Buffy now holds the line.

This explains the disruption in the line that allowed the First to act, it also explains why everyone says Buffy has to die (The potentials, Buffy, The First)

We also know that Buffy came back a little different, so there was something different, it was nothing big but it does show it wasn't an exact same buffy before she died.

My own speculation is that Spike may have been able to hit her because she was The Slayer, not a slayer but the actual Slayer with the line running through her, maybe he would have been able to hit Faitg before Buffy had returned, and his chip wouldn't have gone off. I have nothing really to back this up, but im just speculating.

lol.

It's not strange, Slayers don't have friends, don't seem to have a family, who's there to help them out?
They have their watchers but they are smart enough not to do what Willow did, think about it as much as Giles loved Buffy, he didn't consider a resurrection spell, and he thought what willow did was stupid.

From what we know Buffy is a first with her little gang to help her out.

We also know that Willow is a bad ass Wicca, so even if there was another slayer with friends, there's only a slight possibility they'd have the abilities to do the spell!

Everyone does, The potentials, The First and Buffy herself.

She says that When she dies one of you will be called, and another time that the potentials are all just girls sitting around waiting for her to die.

See i always thought that the first's plan was to wipe out the slayer line. And the slayer line ran through Faith. Kill the rest, Kill Faith. Buffy was a different story, sure she was a slayer, but she was also the first's biggest opposition. It wanted her dead, not so much because she was an end to the line, but more so because, well she's Buffy. Died twice, came back, stopped how many apocalypses, any one who hangs with her, seems to be big and powerful. Beats up gods. And her ex, has a nifty little group of ass-kickers as well. And she happens to be living over the hellmouth, where it's army is. That's what i thought, the first wanted the slayers dead, and wanted Buffy dead, simply because it knew she could kick it's ass. Buffy may have thought that it meant she was back in the slayer line, since the first obsession seemed to be on the slayers, and her. But i always thought it was just the big old first peeing it's pants at the thought of her. Did it have pants. 🙂

To the fact that Buffy was brought back MYSTICALLY by MAGICK, which could essentially activate her line again after having died and come back.

Also, since we aren't given evidence to support your theory that there have been past slayers that have died and come back, as Giles clearly states:
Giles said:
[Willow: Has that happened before?]Not to my knowledge. Um, th-the new Slayer is only called after the previous Slayer has died. Uh... [realizes] Oh, good Lord! You were dead, Buffy... This is completely unprecedented! I'm quite flummoxed.

And, I believe that's all I have to say.

WTF you quoting me for. Get it right Sparky, I have said nothing of what you are suggesting! Don't make me whoop your ass because I am a master at this topic!
lol I think this question should just become a sticky, it gets posted every month and is totally the #1 question.

I can accept that the slayerline is back to Buffy after her second, magical, resurrection.
It even makes sense in many ways. Something has happend that got The First active after all.

That both Buffy and Faith has to die for the next slayer to be called I haven't heard before. Can't recall ever heard that on the show either.
And if thats true I guess Buffy and the Potentials still got it wrong since they clearly seems to think that a new slayer will be called if Buffy dies.

Seems more likely that there are two lines in season 6 and 7.
How it is now after Willow's spell I'm not sure about...

What I wonder is how Buffy knows that the slayerline is back to her.
Do we ever get an explation to that in the show?
Maybe that is something a slayer just know, even though she doesn't seems to know when she lost it in season 1.
