People keep expressing discontent there's not the laughs in Dollhouse they expect from a Joss project. It's like, "Hey, this isn't Buffy season 3. I want my money back".

Here's the official explanation.

Whedon warns you not to expect a carbon copy of Buffy, though. "There is a lot of fun and a lot of humour in Dollhouse, but what it doesn't have is an inherent silliness that both Buffy and Firefly had, and even Angel, where part of the fun was deconstructing the genre we were in. This has to be a little bit more grounded in order for it to play, or it would become campy. With vampires and spaceships and horses, we had more leeway to be a little less realistic in how we plotted things."

"Part of the mandate of the show is to make people nervous," the Dollhouse producer added. "It's to make them identify with people they don't like and get into situations that they don't approve of."

I love the great combination of laughs and depression in Buffy. Thats one of the main things that makes Buffy so brilliant and great to watch.

So, in a way I actually do miss that in Dollhouse. It is almost needed for me to really love a show I think.

But it's not so easy that they can just make a few more funny jokes and the show would be even better.
I agree with Whedon on this. That probably means that Dollhouse will not be one of my all-time favorites but by keeping it more "grounded" it will still be a really great show.
I really prefer that over a stupid attempt to please all Buffy fans on a show that just isn't Buffy.

Even though I really miss the occasional sillyness in Dollhouse, I can understand their decision. After all, it's a whole different show, with a different premise. I think that actual jokes would sort of ruin the whole mysterious secret organisation thing. Like Whedon said, them premisse of Buffy (and I assume also Firefly) left more than enough leeway for humerous intermezzos (intermezzi?).

Plus, it's still a Whedon show, so Whedon humour has and will be popping up now and again. I'm quite confident about that.
 
Humour doesn't have to be silliness.

I dont really have a major problem with Dollhouse in this respect but I will say that just because a show is more serious, doesn't mean it cant have humour. Dollhouse seems to be lacking the trademark Joss wit.

I think the ratings have done a spot-on job of carrying out that.
 
The first two episodes were pretty humorless, so I wasn't enjoying them on a Whedon-level, and was thus kind of disappointed with the show.

But the humour has been far more abundant in the last 3 episodes, so I'm happy now.
 
This show has the perfect amount of humor. If it had much more it would completely defeat the purpose of the show.
 
All I have to say is 'PORN' that scene, for those who saw episode 6 cracked me up.

ANnd I understand that its a more serious show and I actully love that. I think that its way more realistic so I understand the need for Joss to stop the jokes. There is still a couple of good ones tho. I dont think I'll change it, it will make the show look a bit weird.

I don't think people necessarily ever expected the show to be hilarious. The first five episodes just didn't really have any of the trademark Whedon stylings, including humor. I enjoy 24 quite a lot, and there's very little humor in that show (the one big laugh I can think of this season was the two FBI agent's back and forth "You're a little bitch!"). With Dollhouse, I think people wanted the humor because there first few episodes didn't really offer much for you to connect with emotionally either, and were kind of slow in advancing in any overall arch. I think now that things are picking up a bit, people will complain less about a lack of humor in Dollhouse even if the show doesn't actually get any funnier.
 
Well, I would have to say that episode 6 finally made me think to myself "so this is a Joss show after all!!" Porn internet husband guy hangin with FBI dude? Yeah. haha. He was full of colorful Joss humor. Don't ask me what I mean by "colorful'. You know what I mean. The point is, it was funny!

But on a more serious note, Dollhouse is not Buffy. Why try to be? You don't want to spoil a good thing. Besides, maybe he's trying to be more mainstream. That grumpy fox won't let him be too "out there"! But, I hope from what I saw in episode 6 we'll be seeing so more Joss humor!

I agree. While Joss is a very funny man, it doesn't mean everything he does has to be in the same style. I think the fact that Dollhouse is so different than anything else he has created show he has a great rang. it a good thing.

Dollhouse is a show with an extremely serious subject matter, possible more so than Buffy. At times i felt Joss humor ruined some scenes of Buffy. I was botherd by all the laughing in the face of danger. Some scenes that could have been really powerful were just down right cheasy because of the humor.

that being said, i am happy at the return of of Joss humor, i just hope they don't over do it.
 
There are three bits of the show that have made me laugh so far!

2- A Sneezure
3- PORN!! Lol!!!
 
Tonight's eppy was perhaps the funniest of the lot thus far. The Jossedy (Joss+comedy) is back!
