In my opinion, both Darla and Cordelia knew him best, just in very different ways.



Some of you have mentioned that Darla only knew soulless Angelus, so didn't really know him at all. I disagree with that.

Although people lose their souls when they become vampires, some of their character traits remain. Just look at Harmony, who barely changed at all. Or Spike, who as a vampire was still as love-ridden as he was as a man. The outing of these traits is just a little different, influenced by evil.

This underlying personality base is what makes me believe that Darla still knows ensouled Angel better than anyone (but Cordelia, maybe).

Also, soul or no soul, they spent over a century together. In that time, you don't only get to know the other one, but you also influence them. Our past interactions make us who we are, and 100 years together are just really hard to top.

Buffy knew and loved Angel better than anyone, experienced first hand his cruelty soulless and never stopped loving him. Wanted his soul restored to save him.Buffy was not afraid to look at Angel's vampire face, touch it and kiss him. Buffy saw the good in Angel when no one else did and after Angel was brought back by the TPTB she taught him to fight. It looked like Buffy didn't trust Angel but she told him everything cried in his arms after smashing the masters bones, and trusted him when she made him drink her to save his life after Faith poisoned him and she was the only one he had loved his entire existence mortal and immortal. Buffy chose Angel time and time again and would do so over and over again because he is Angel the only man she has ever truly loved.

Here's my thing about Buffy. She really did know Angel when they were together. But that was only a short period of time. After Angel left, he became a completely different person - a person that Cordelia got to know and Buffy didn't. Buffy was close to the person that Angel once was, but Cordelia, Wesley, Gunn, Fred, Faith, Lorne, etc., got to know and understand the person he turned into, making all of them closer to him than Buffy. Sorry, i'm not trying to hate on Buffy, but i really don't think it makes sense to take all the relationships Angel's had throughout both shows into account, and still say that Buffy comes out on top. The person who knows him the very best has gotta be Cordy. Followed by the rest of the AI members.

I don't think the way Angel changed was natural. And he got goofy and silly which made Angel look nerdy and uncool. he was very cool on Buffy.

Actually, he was boring as hell on Buffy(i'm not talking about Angelus). He got cooler, funnier, nastier and much more interesting once he moved to his own show. He was an actual three dimensional character then.

I have to go with the consensus, it's Cordy hands-down. I'm not sure that Buffy even makes the top 5.

After Cordy, I'd probably say, Spike understood Angel best. Then Wes, but keep in mind, I don't think Wes looked at Angel as a friend since very early season 2, in S5 they were strong allies, but they never seemed at complete ease around each other after they'd each done such major betrayals.

Gunn never trusted Angel. And Fred & Lorne had a hero worship for Angel up until very late into the show. Imo, Cordy & Spike are the only two that actually like Angel's company, but also understand him enough to call him on his crap.

I guess Cordy > Spike >> Wes >> Buffy & Connor
