In the beginning of the season, it was made clear to us that the big bads were Spike and Dru. But then Angel turned evil, and he is a big bad!

How did you see it? Who was the real big bad of season 2? Spike and Dru or Angelus?

I always saw Angelus as the Big Bad, because ultimately he was the one who Buffy had to beat. But that's why I love season 2, the dynamic between Angel/Spike/Drusilla was fun to watch

Angelus was the big bad. His desire for destruction was so great Spike ended up joining Buffy's side to stop him.

Angelus. It was his idea to suck the world into H-E-double-hockey-sticks, and he was the one traumatizing Buffy by targeting people she knew and cared about.

I'm thinking Dru on her own. First of all for consistency since she was a major villain through the entire season. Also, she was the one who actually wanted to end the world. Spike helped her with execution in the first half, because he wanted her to be happy, and in the second half, Angelus helped her execute her end the world scheme (Acathla) because he wanted Buffy to suffer, but it was Dru that was really obessesed with ending the world. Also, in season 7 when the first was posing as all the big bads, Drucilla was the one for season 2.

Although Angelus would be another really valid opinion because since he was the real emotional villain for Buffy, and the one that had to be defeated in the end, and the one she had the final fight with.

Spike tried to be the Big Bad, but ended up getting badly overshadowed.

Angelus, no doubt. S2 is very true to the formula in that regard - introduce the "Little Bad" (Sprusilla) early on, and add the Big Bad to the equation halfway through the season.

Angelus. Spike was NOT a big bad. the guys HELPS in the finale. He wanted to be a big bad, but he wasn't bad enough... story of Spike's life.

Dru was just crazy. She would go along with whatever was the baddest thing around, AKA Spike then Angelus.

For me, it was Angel/us, ensouled Angel's lack of reconciling himself, his past, his soul and his monster prior to this point, and the impact innocence and the loss thereof has...but i'm admittedly weird, so...

Yep definitely Angelus. Certainly whilst Spike and Dru carried the Torch for most of the season up until that point, it was Angelus who took it and ran to the finishing line with it. I consider the big bad to be whoever Buffy is gearing up to fight for the finale and since Spike bowed out and dragged Dru with him Angelus became the main baddie.

I think Angelus was the big bad in S2... Originally I was thinking Spike and Dru were going to be the big bads, but I think Angelus proved to be much scarier and more effective at shaking up Buffy and the Scoobies.

I think the Annoying one, Spike and Drusilla were all a "hey look over here" approach in order to smoothly introduce Angelus as the big bad after half the season. They needed a 'small' bad before that for the story to work and I think they balanced it beautifully. So yeah, I think Angelus was always meant to be the big bad, ripping big emotional holes in our poor Slayer.

Good point Taake. They also talked up "The Judge" a fair bit and how dangerous he was (doing another Big Bad fakeout) , but he got knocked out of the game pretty quickly in retrospect. It was cool seeing buffy blow him to bits but he was kinda underwhelming as a villain.

Angelus, totally. He was just plain nasty, cruel, evil. Which kinda goes away in the ANGEL show. And I'm kinda disappointed by that.

Wasn't that the joke of the character though?

I completely agree - Angelus 100%. The season stepped up a gear when he turned, and it became more exciting and thrilling to watch - his attention to detail in tormenting Buffy, his killing of Jenny produced some of the best moments in the season. It gave the show more energy and his desire for utter carnage was compelling.

Making him the best villain in the Buffyverse' in my opinion.

Personally, I would say Angelus. However, Spike and Drusilla were pretty destructive as well. It's a tough call because all three of them wanted Buffy's heart ripped out. Angelus was all about the personal torment, While Spike and Drusilla just wanted her dead. Their methods were completely different. Angelus had fun watching Buffy suffer. Spike was getting very ansy and agitated.
