Season 8 ended with a bang when Buffy cut the world off from the hell dimensions and all supernatural influence. Great, right? Except Buffy has left her best friend, Willow, powerless, and ended the long line of vampire slayers, leaving her hated by the hundreds of girls who recently stood behind her. Newly relocated to San Francisco, Buffy can count on a fresh start, and focus on what she's good at"”slaying.

"¢ Written by creator Joss Whedon, with Andrew Chambliss of the CW's The Vampire Diaries!

These are so beautiful--wow!
OMG, can't wait. I'm actually more excited for "Angel and Faith" than Buffy though...i'm definitely going to buy every cover they come out with!

And so it begins.

VERY excited! for Buffy Season 9 mostly, but being that Faith is paired up with Angel, I'll have no choice but to follow that as well.

oh my god those are beautiful. I want both. framed. in my room, right now.

the Buffy one is a little confusing though. Obviously it fits the theme of "freefall", but the prominence of the seagulls is odd to me, I have no idea why Buffy is wrapped up in a sheet, and the color scheme makes it look a bit like heaven. I wonder what this means? Probably nothing, but you can never be too sure. The likeness of SMG is amazing though!

Well it's clearly San Fransisco & being on a bay & close to the ocean I' sure there are lots of seagulls! The sheet makes memwonder if this is a dream
- dream sequences played a big part on season 8, maybe it will be the same for this season.

Hm, maybe it's just my extreme dislike of seagulls that made them seem so glaringly weird to me in that cover. LOL

and yes, it does look like a dream! Interesting, I didn't think of that before. I feel like I need to re-read Season 8 before Season 9 starts!

I think by the name Free Fall, Buffy falling from the heaven she created with Angel "Twilight" by choice to the earth. S8 was a big fairytale, a very dark one, and Buffy is finally waking up - the pillow and sheet.

The seagull reminds me of Willow in #26 when she turned herself into a seagull.

We're doing a re-read here on BB- join us!

I thought of Willow too!

"But with a little TLC—courtesy of his only remaining ally, Faith, Angel is back to fighting the good fight and taking demons down one by one."

Shucks, I was looking forward more to the "Get off your dead, brooding ass and get out there and start trying to make up for all of the damage you've done," kind of care that to the tender loving kind. I mean, really, if there was ever an ass that just BEGGED to be kicked for what it's owner had done, I would have sworn that it would be Angel's.

Both of these covers look like a theme of dreamscapes - I wonder if the first issues for both series will be connected by Angel being in a dreamscape and coming out of his months of catatonic state from his dreamscape experience.

What does it mean to "free fall" - is it anxiety or a longing for freedom. Usually dreamscape in flight are anxiety dreams.

Who's to say that we won't see that happen? Faith doesn't exactly mince words & we only have a small snippet.

It could be a dream. On Steve Morris's site he said he couldn't share the idea behind it as it ties into the story.

Along with “Angel & Faith” I’ll be doing a few Buffy covers, which was an unexpected surprise. Often liking to push story content into abstract and conceptual visuals, this cover is no exception although I can’t explain the idea without giving story away. Buffy originally had a quizzical expression, but Dark Horse decided that on this first cover of the new season, she should be more placidly faced…which was probably for the better because I’m not sure I had the mouth correct on the first one.

I'd say the cover fits with a surrealistic take on waking up. S8 was a "Walking Nightmare" as both Amy says in #2 and it's a theme Buffy reiterates in #40. #9-1 has Buffy waking up to a topsy-turvy world which would explain the original quizzical face and her being in bed.

I wish they'd have stuck with the original. Buffy's face in the released version feels kind of out of place and sort of turns the cover from being a tied-together piece to Buffy Naked In Bed With Abstract Background. Not that it's ugly, I only think the other might have been nicer. Hopefully Morris posts sketches of the original.
