Some Benefits of Media Studies

Think this belongs here so here we go.

In Media Studies (AS Level) we have two parts, the Print half and the Audio Visual half. In the AV half we seem to study Buffy a lot. So far we've watched Buffy's death scene in The Gift (from Dawn first bleeding to them finding her body) and the bit before that in the Magic Shop, from Buffy coming in to Xander saying "Cadunkle" or whatever he says when he saw the tower.

Today we were split into groups to anaylse things and our group was given the episode Dopplegangland (others had Scream, Once Upon a Time In The West and Charlies Angels) so we watched first ten mins of that.

Also in the print side we had a 10 min discussion on how Buffy challenges dominant ideology; Buffy being the hero, Willow and Tara being lesbians, Spike and Buffy's Sado Masachist sex romps.

Apart from that Media Studies is boring.
 
I so have to ask my friends who take Media if they have done anything Buffy related 🙂
 
That's fantastic! At my university you could also do a degree in the Simpsons.

I think what AshSan shows us here is that Buffy is worthy of in-depth discussion - so many people don't get that - there are so many themes, ideas and complex narratives going on. Buffy's always been overlooked by people who dismiss it as 'kid's tv' without having seen it......

I agree...there are layers and layers worth discussing on this show. It really does frustrate me that the show doesn't meet with higher praise.
 
We discuss seven areas. Buffy fits into Ideology, Genre, Representation, Audience and possibly another one but I forgot what its called. It is a good talking point, although nobody in my class seems to like it.
 
Because Im at school, I ALWAYS try to do anything Buffy related.
In Art, we had to design a bag, for a shop like HMV, or Virgin, so I asked my teacher if I could do like a Buffy shop, 'The Magic Box' and he was like yeah, so I did a Buffy bag!
Also, In English, we were doing creative writing, and I did a Buffy thing. Its cool!
 
We had Buffy day in English, we watched the Puppet Show and wrote about Buffy as a modern female action hero. I'm trying to convince my professor that having an Angel day would be even better.
