Something I never noticed before

During a recent rewatch of ssn 4 I noticed a line that Spike says that I found very interesting.

When Spike is locked in the initiative cells during the episode The Initiative, Spike says, "The Slayer! Of course, I always wondered what would happen if (she) ever got some funding. I have had it with her, this time I'm going to kill her... I don't care how brilliant she is." Now this line is just slipped in, said entirely in passing and almost but not quite under Spike's breath. Has anyone else noticed this line before?

I can't remember it. I would imagine its Joss sowing the Buffy love seed ready for season 5
 
Huh. I've heard it before, I think, the brilliant part. But I figured he meant "No matter how smart she thinks she is" but now I wonder if he wasn't a bit sad, that he would kill her, since he admired her, and meant "brilliant" in that way.
 
I remember that clearly from my very first watching of the episode, maybe because I streamed it online. That was when he was talking with the other vamp in the adjacent cell, I think.
 
Am I the only one who doesn't get what you're referring to? I mean, I know the quote very well, it makes me laugh that after Spike says that it cuts to Buffy, not so brilliant with the pen. It's one of my favorite jokes. But I don't get what I'm supposed to get...
 
Hm, can't say I've ever noticed that line. Will have to pay attention during my next re-watch 🙂
 
It not so much what he says, but that he says it with complete admiration. Later in the series we learn that Dru left him because he couldn't stop thinking about Buffy, but I think this is the very first hint that Spike might be starting to develop amorous feelings for Buffy. Though obviously there is a way to go before he even realizes what he feels about Buffy.

I think that admiration had always been there... remember when he watched the video of her fighting in season 2? "Oooh! She's tricky!"

I would love to know if this is what the writers or the actor intended(they could even have different ideas about it), or if it's something that simply "became". Maybe the line was suppose to be said differently, then the editor who choose this specific daily "created" the meaning.

I mean, the writer and the actor and director and whoever else could have intended for a character to sound/look/mean a certain thing, but that doesn't mean it's what ends up on screen. Not that there is a absolute truth, and in a ideal world the people on the show do know the character enough to say exactly what they were thinking, but by the end of the day, the text(tv show, book etc etc) is independent and autonomous. Like the Faith & Buffy romanctic subtext, that I heard Joss denied until fans convinced him it was there. Or how JM played Spike with sexual tension or whatever he called it when stalking Buffy at the Bronze in School Hard, that the writes may not have intended.
 
I remember that line. I always thought it was funny. 😀 To think Buffy somehow got "funding" and built a military base. 😛
 
Its not the funding part of the speech that I'm referring to here, that speech I've always loved. Its that little passing comment about how brilliant she (Buffy) is, that I'm sure that I've heard it many times, but the last time I watched the ep that line just kind of jumped out at you before.
 
I think it could be the beginnings of Spuffy but it could also just be him acknowledging that Buffy is a good slayer and fighter as she's the first one he was unable to kill.
 
Haha that sounds vaguely familiar...I don't remember him calling her brilliant though. I haven't watched that episode in ages though, I definitely pay more attention next time.
