Something I never understood about The First

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I never understood this;

When The First takes appearances of ones that passed away; (Joyce, Jonathan, Angel's victims etc)

Are the victims' ghosts; aware of The First taking their appearances to haunt their loved ones?

The First Evil's manifestations are exactly the opposite (visible but non corporeal) of the only example of the genuine article that we ever saw in the Buffyverse, Phantom Dennis, who was invisible but corporeal.

Well, are there even ghosts of dead people in the Buffyverse?
I mean, we know that there's some kind of afterlife and we know that there can be poltergeists and things like that, like in I Only Have Eyes for You. But I'm not sure whether there are actual ghosts of dead people that are aware of the events that take place on earth. There only seem to be ghosts of people that have been murdered or had an premature death.
