Okay, I'm not sure if there's a thread for this, but all day long this has been bugging me, for some strange reason. I was just thinking, Joyce and Hank are divorced, right? So why did Joyce keep her last name as Summers? I mean, I would have thought she'd have gone back to her Maiden name. It may sound like a really weird question/statement It's just been irritating me, all day.

Alot of women do that. My aunt did it when she and her husband broke up, and countless other women that I know too. Maybe they couldn't be bothered going to the trouble of changing it again or maybe they don't want to erase that part of their lives even if it didn't work out.

some people don't. My boyfriend's parents divorced when he was 15. He's 28 now, and his mom never changed from her married name (Ocasio) back to her maiden (Santiago). My boyfriend however, wants to change HIS last name to his mother's maiden name, because he likes it better and also because he has issues with his father. But she never seemed to express a desire to change it. Part of it is well, it's a pain in the butt when your name is one way on everything to change it all back.

My mother didn't when she got divorced, mainly because of all the hassle with changing you name on your driving licence and legal stuff..

Also on tv it'd be kinda confusing if the mother and daughter had different surnames, so I guess it was simpler to keep Buffy and Joyces surname the same..

Most people keep there married name. My mother kept hers. Also its alot to change all of yours stuff over from your married name to your maiden name again.

Changing your name is a pain in the butt.

My theory is that Joyce had career contacts and name recognition in her field. I mean, she ran her own gallery and made a pretty nice living doing it. Look at the life she was able to provide for Buffy: a house in Southern CA, a trendy wardrobe, a college education, etc. Buffy never even had to work until after Joyce died. Even if she was getting help from Hank, Joyce still had to be pretty darn successful in her chosen field to be able to provide that kind of lifestyle. I've got friends in the art history field. According to them, you need at least a Master's and probably a Ph.D in order to gt any sort of job, let alone to do something like that. Joyce probably worked hard for her career while under her married name. She was also a mother. She probably wanted to have Buffy's last name.

Yeah, pretty much what all you guys have said, covers what I'm going to say. Haha.
When my Mom got divorced she kept by Dad's name for the sake of me. She didn't wish to have a different surname from me and felt that I shouldn't have mine changed until I was old enough to make the decision myself. (Which I did at age 18. Hehe. Course then marriage changed it again...*sigh*)
And I think Palabravampiress got down the other side of it; business recognition. If Joyce had stated her career in art (history or otherwise) with her married name then it would make sense for her to keep it as it is that name that retains her business standing. I know a few people who, when they've gotten married and chosen to take their husband's name, it's caused quite an issue in the working world trying to reaffirm with every contact that yes, they are the same person etc. Complicated stuff, hehe.
Or who knows maybe Hank actually took Joyce's name? And her second name actually is Summers. Not likely considering what impression we got of Hank's character, but hey, it's possible.

Or maybe Joyce and Hank had the same surname in the family.
But I reckon it's gotta be easier on the kids.

I don't know many divorced people, but two of them are my little sister and my mother-in-law. They both changed their names back, but they were both in extremely abusive relationships. (My mother-in-law's wasn't with my father-in-law; it was her second marriage. She kept her original married name until she married again, then changed it back about 7 years after divorcing him.) It was a way to symbolically kick every piece of the person out of their lives.

Huh, I feel lame and stupid now, but it all makes sense, thanks 😉 😀

maybe she kept it because summers is such a cool last name... yeah i'm being a smart alec
