Hi everyone! I'd be very interested in hearing (well, reading) your thoughts on this...

So, I believe that everything sort of moves in waves...ebbs and flows, rises and falls. I think emotion is like this...sometimes we're excited and happy (up) and sometimes life seems dreary and we're bored or discontent (down)....in those down times, what do you find helps lift you back up? What gives you something to sing about at times when you just can't hear the music?

Well there's a couple things for me.

When I'm really down in life I usually do one of two things, start playing my acoustic guitar, or working on a woodburning.

Guitar really helps me sort through my emotion and kind of cleanse myself.

Once I'm done with a new woodburning, I get a really emotional high from it. I guess you could say that I'm a little addicted to it. I get so happy and up after I'm done, and even while I'm working on it, if it's going well, that it takes that down feeling completely away.

you play guitar too. not fair! ;-) But yes, I can see how doing something artistic helps. :-)
For me, personally, it's working with kids and young people. No matter what life throws at me, or how depressed I get or how hopeless it seems, I just remember how there are still people young and old who have good intentions and haven't let life make them bitter and hateful. Being around them makes me want to be hopeful and optimistic like they are I guess.

that's awesome! (and helping others is a great way to get out of yourself, which, for me, is usually the problem...too much me)
I usually either watch a few episodes of Buffy, listen to early Beatles music (the poppy stuff, not the late 60's we're-on-drugs-now stuff. I listen to that when I need to mellow out.), or knit/crochet. There's something soothing about weaving a piece of string into fabric...

yay buffy and beatles!! and I think I get what you're saying about weaving... very cool.
I actually just have a good cry 😛 I always feel better after it, it's weird.

Either that or listen to music that's known to cheer me up. Or watch a film/show or read a book. Escapism FTW.

me too I have a good cry and get it out of my system
I usually listen to The Smiths like a good teenage cliche 😛

Either that or I watch Buffy or Glee, it never ceases to cheer me up.

It depends how I'm feeling. I think photoshop is very soothing, when I'm sad I can make sad banners and such. If I feel like crying I cry or else I'll just well up all day over pathetic things. I also like to go out with my friends or spend hours talking to my boyfriend and having cuddles, he's a very soothing soul and always makes me feel content.

Music. When I feel sad, I watch a show I love and listen to music that fits my mood. It makes me happier. Also, talking to Tabby helps. She makes me smile. *sigh* OOOH and I watch convention videos of James... or go back and read old LJ posts about fan experiences with him. He's quite the character. it's fun to learn about him.

I also go to the used bookstore when I get upset. Not to shop, just, and I feel myself physically turning into Giles as I type this, but there's something so calming about books. The smell, the texture, the text itself! I love it.

Books make everything better! :)
I have Bi Polar so my ups and downs can get a little extreme 😛 Im mostly down though so I have tons of strategies to help me cope, although they dont always work so I turn to alcohol or drugs/meds to get me through. Not the healthiest option but sometimes its all that can get rid of the black dog.

Besides that I have my pony, the light of my life. She is great at pickiing up my emotions so its a bit of a double edged sword. Some days I cant get near her cos she is picking up on my anger or anxiety. But usually if I am down she wants to come for cuddles and scratches to cheer me up. I have to make sure my energy is calm if I want to ride or she will buck me off, the little cow.

I also write quite alot, something my doc makes me do, it helps at times and other times I get obsessional over a topic and it just gets me in deeper. I also used to do alot of arts and crafts but I havent done that for ages - too much mess to clean up after! I love love love listening to music. If I am feeling sad its mostly stuff I liked during my teenage years but just listening to triple J is usually sufficient.

Chocolate never fails to help either 😉

I know that it's corney, and old, but, then, so am I. When I begin to feel really low, this is the song that always cheers me up again.
