My husband has been watching angel for the first time, he's really enjoying it. It's pretty neat to be married to such a big nerd.
To get to the point(pun intended), whilst watching the episode "Somnambulist", I noticed that Kate Lockley was able to shove a sharpened 2x4, not just through one vampire, but two. Now knowing that Willow, Xander, and a myriad of other "normal" characters have slayed vamps, I would not have found the idea of Kate dusting a vamp a big deal. I do however have a serious doubt that Kate would have the strength necessary to put such a thick stake through two vampires.
It seems like to get the stake through the ribs with an instrument that large would be burden enough(I'm not even gonna talk about getting enough force to break through)but to also make it through Angel without slowing down would be impossible for any normal character. I believe the task would be something only someone with supernatural strength like a slayer would be able to perform. The idea that Kate (a woman with a small frame) could do that kind of damage is just laughable. I'm a woman, and I don't want you guys getting the wrong idea here. I think women are powerful, but "don't let's be silly" now.

What do you guys think? Bad writing? A simple misjudgment made to move the plot along? Or do you believe it could happen, and that I'm just nitpicking?

One possible explanation here, which I admit is VERY stab in the dark conjecture, would be that wood penetrating a vampire's chest cavity is the equivalent of stabbing a red hot blade into a piece of ice, or maybe even a big blob of whipped cream. The wood literally burns its way through bone, cartilage, and internal organ (the heart). That would also explain a vampire dusts when staked. They internally combust in reaction to the wood, and they do it in so violent and near instantaneous a way that they seem to go straight from solid flesh to dust or ash without any flame in between the two forms.

But it still sounds kinda contrived to me.

You haven't tried yet, have you? Actually tested it out?

look. once you understand that yer mate ain't gonna kick it, then you get to push harder than you ever imagined you could. Supernatural? yes. above and beyond!

don't sweat it.
