I got happy when I read that from Variety but what once was rumored, it being a prequel about the formation of the group in the war and them bringing it back 'home' (which could have been an awesome story) has now devolved into:

Few details are known, as the series is in very early development, but the spinoff would focus on the Mayans motorcycle crew and would be set in the Northern California motorcycle club scene.

In the flagship series, the Mayans, the Oakland-based Hispanic gang, ran heroin factories and were involved in prostitution.

Sutter would serve as exec producer on the untitled project, though he is searching for a showrunner to run the day-to-day grind, as he will remain focused on “Bastard,” among other upcoming projects. Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions would produce the offshoot.

Sutter’s “Sons of Anarchy” is FX’s most popular series to date. The gritty drama ended its seven-year run last December with 6.4 million viewers in same-night viewing and 9.3 million in Live+3, according to Nielsen. Overall, its seventh and final season goes down as the highest-rated in FX history, averaging 7.55 million viewers and about 5 million in the adults 18-49 demo.
I think I might have to give it a pass.. it would feel too much like more of the same. At least to me.

The Mayans were good, but it sounds like it'll just be the exact same show with a different club. I liked the idea of Nomads better. I read the same about the prequel and the whole JT storyline -- that would have been interesting.

Yeah, I would have been 100% sold on a prequel. But I guess finding actors to resemble younger versions of pre-existing characters would have been hard.. but I would not have minded if they didnt resemble the original.

Holy hell, they'd be hard pushed to find anyone who resembles a young Ron Perlman. He has a very unique face.
