Soulmates

I believe in my understanding of soul mates, and my understanding is not the "popular" or "traditional" concept of soul mates.

One of the greatest beliefs I hold true is that of the individual. That only I can make myself. Only I can fill in the gaps of my being. I am the the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.

No matter whether I live a solitary life or share my years with another, I will do it as an individual of my own construction. When I break, I mend the fault. No one else. I will not be held together by any other person, nor will I keep any other person from falling apart.

However, I believe in connection. In believe in the power of others in heightening my life. I believe in belonging. I believe in love and I believe that the soul mate bond is the absolute zenith of that emotion.

A soul mate does not come into your life and turn everything right side up. They do not "fix you". They help you. They give you strength. They give you love. They make the intolerable, tolerable.

Perhaps this sounds like I am describing any friendship but believe me, anyone who has met one of their soul mates can a test to this, there is a supreme difference between friendship and the bond between soul mates.

I have a handful of incredibly close friends. Best friends, even. But so far I have only one soul mate. As much as I love my best friends, there is a difference in how we treat each other, in the level of support we provide each other, in the solace we give each other. Those relationships, some lasting years, cannot compare to that one.

The soul mate bond just was. Once we got to know each other it was just there. We didn't create it, we didn't nurture it. It nurtured us. And it is an incredible feeling to know that you have someone that no matter what, loves you, supports you and will go to war for you. We belong to each other and to the bond. It's the best feeling in the world.

But it doesn't take all you other feelings away. You still have to fight through life just as before, but now you have someone pushing you through.

I believe that it is possible to have more than one soul mate. I have found one soul mate who is my friend. If I happen to fall in love with another soul mate? Well then, I'll be very lucky indeed. 🙂

I don't believe in soul mates in the sense that I don't think there's just one person for everybody or that things are predestined. I think love means different things to different people, so 'soul mate' doesn't necessarily fit everyone's idea of love or friendship.

I believe in soulmates, but not in the conventional sense. I don't believe that there's one person, one soul for someone. But I believe that if you find someone you truly love, that they become a part of your soul. I've been in love before the person I'm with, and I carry her around with me. She became a part of my soul, even though she's not in my life anymore. There are still good memories that I keep with me.

But the person I'm with is my soulmate now. He's a part of my soul. If we're apart for more than a day, it really bothers me. I don't like nights alone, even though they're unavoidable. (I work away from my house for days at a time, so I have to sleep here.) We've been together for 3 1/2 years, and I know there will be more. We've lived together for 3 years. I can't imagine life without this person in my life. 🙂

In short, yes, I believe in soulmates. Do I believe that there's only one person in each life that you're meant to be with? No.

But if you're lucky enough to find someone you truly love, who truly loves you, why bother trying to figure out if they're the one? Just be happy you've found love in your life. That kind of love can be so rare. And yes, you may have to work at it, but when you look back at all the work you've put into this, and all that's become of it, it'll just strengthen your bond.
