Southern Spike

Originally, Spike was supposed to have a Southern accent.

If Spike indeed had a Southern accent, would it affect your outlook on him now? Why or why not? Would he still be the same Spike as he is now or would he be different.

To me, if they would've had Spike with a Southern accent, he would've been ridiculous from the get go [but that's because I'm thinking of the Gorches and they were hilarious].

I would have loved to see a badass with a Southern accent... I'm thinking Daryl Dixon from "The Walking Dead". The Gorches were supposed to be a parody and supposed to make Southerners look stupid as Hell, so it's not really fair to judge how Spike would have been with a Southern accent based off them. LOL

However, when I think Spike, I think sexy British Spike. I can't imagine him any other way. 🙂

Thank god they didn't make him Southern. I wouldn't have had a very good first impression of him, in that I wouldn't accept his badassery due to the accent. Not to insult Southerners, just that I don't care for the accent itself. (Still love Fred.) Anyway, Brit accents are the best.

I probably would have loved it, but since we got British Spike I simply cannot picture him as a southern Spike now without a small giggle.

Being English is a facet of Spike's character that I can't imagine him without. Of course, if he'd been Southern from the get-go, then they'd probably have built some of his past history on that.

(Also, pet-peeve: it's an English accent he has, not a British one. There's technically no such thing as a British accent.)

Actually, it would explain why so many women are so attracted to Spike, because everybody knows that all Southern men are handsome, charming, witty, sophisticated, amazingly sexy, and possess the spirit of warriors and the hearts of poets, not to mention being the greatest natural lovers in the entire human race. Us Southern men have got it all.

I come from the south of England and can work a Giles-type accent. Does that count? 🙂

It would have been interesting to hear Spike with another accent. There are times when JM gets the English thing a bit wrong and it annoys me, which as much as anything else is why Spike was never one of my favourite characters.

Just to clarify my statement above concerning the natural charm of Southern men (especially those over 50) I would like to point out that the Gooch brothers were TEXANS, not true Southerners. Totally different thing.

We probably would've accepted it by now, and it wouldn't have been a problem. If he was Southern all along, we would've had a thread like "what if Spike was English?" Then everybody would go, "na, I definitely couldn't see it." 😉

By the way, my entire family's from Southern US (my accent comes out when I'm mad or something 😛), so I can attest that Southern men have the entire package. 😀
