Spangel

Well gross might have been the wrong word, but I just don't see them as ever having anything which could be deemed romantic, at best there is a begrudging respect. Even when they are supposed to be on the same team they still seem to scribble😀

Yeah - no romance. Not big on the fluff. They squabble like old marrieds but n a crisis Angel is in charge, and Spike has his back.

Love is about what you do, not what you say. And shagging, hey they've really done that since Spike was first vamped. The good stories deal with who these characters are - how they understand each other far more than any human can. So no flowers, candle light dinners, and pretty jewelry. Just a bond that goes back over a century. The long view is that when Buffy is dead, and all the scoobs are dust, Spike and Angel will still have each other. Even if they go decades without contact, that bond will always exist.

I get all that and if people want to read that into it then fine. It just doesn't work for me and I think part of the appeal of the Angel-Spike dynamic is the constant attempts to one up each other and that even includes when they are on the same side. Even the scenes from the past where they wracked havoc together does not paint a pretty picture.

Yeah - I like that too. Everything shown on the screen is grist for the mill. I wouldn't like them so much together if they were anything but snarky, cmpetitive and arguing constantly. One of my favorite scenes is when Angel is off to get Lindsey and says he won't risk anyone he cares about - Spike says he'll go and Angel accepts in a blink.

Maybe it's the word love that throws you off - this scene perfectly shows what I mean about their connection.

They know each other - they expect things from each other. They back each other up, risk their lives for each other (I slew the white haired one first), comfort each other (once upon a time), and bitch about each other. You know, all that bitching - 40 minutes on cavemen and astronauts - contains a lot of passion. They really know each others triggers intimately, and have no qualm about using them. And a lot of the flashbacks show that they knew other things about each other as well. Keep in mind that the TGIQ flashbacks are real too, and the sub.

FYI - there are some ships I don't get either. But very often a really good story will give me a new perspective. I started as a Spuffy fan (Spike wants Buffy - Spike gets Buffy) and I enjoyed that. But them I read some excellent Spangel and I pulled back to see the larger picture. That's really when I learned to appreciate Angel, and the Fanged Four, and Spike/Angel.

Think of it as Wesley and Lilah - after knowing each other for over a century. 😀

And knowing that, in all likelihood, their human companions are all going to fade away in a much shorter future than they themselves are. And what's a few years or even decades apart from each other when you know you're going to live forever? They've both shown to have great skill at longevity, despite high-risk lifestyles, and despite the fact that it's an awfully big world they keep coming back to each others company 🙂 (However grudgingly 😉 )

You are wise and insightful, oh great one!
So I've got to the Angelus season 2 part of my Buffy rewatch, so how could I not revive this thread.

I so wish Spike wasn't in the wheelchair then, I would loved to have seen them strong and evil together.

They have a powerful relationship, no doubt, but even if they got physically intimate once...that does not a long term sexual relationship make.

They will fight, make up, hate each other etc, but I don't think they have a future that includes a lot of shagging.

People have one offs among their circle of friends all the time.

Oops, maybe that's TMI...(retreats to cavern under a rock)

I don't think Spike could ever truly get with Angelus's style of evil or vice versa. That was a great deal of their tension

I'm not going into the physcial stuff connected to them😛

Have mixed feelings on Spike in the wheelchair. Yes it sidelined him a bit too much, but then it did open up further tension between him and Angel over Dru. I think given the fresh possiblities opened up by the Angelus plot then I can see why that took central focus in the second half of the season. Also, the trio of Spike/Dru/Angelus were very good playing off each other, but if you had too much focus on them it would have been over kill.
