Speculation on Gates the Monkey

Something's up with Fray's monkey Gates, right? We can all agree on that much, can't we?

So what is it? What some of us have been speculating for some time is Gates might be Dawn's third transformation. You know The Key = Gates.

Others speculate Giles, because of the watcher connection.

I heard Xander mentioned as a possibility today.

Nobody mentions Andrew. Why is that, I wonder. There is the watcher connection. The monkey thing feels apt. Do we know where Andrew is right now btw? Did he go home to Italy after Wolves at the Gate, or did he go back to the Scottish castle?

If Gates isn't a Scoob, I wonder what his story is. Is it just what it seems to be? A demon monkey. Here's hoping there's more to Gates the monkey than that.
 
I just thought of something about it being Xander. This arc is straight after the one that had Dracula in it, in Drac's episode, Xander said he was no longer anyone's Buttmonkey!. Foreshadowing?

Well there does seem to be evidence that the monkey is someone we know, or an ally of sorts. Honestly though I'm inclined to believe it isn't Dawn, even though that "Gates" "Key" comment is quite astute. I don't believe it would be dawn because it would theoretically eliminate dawn from being in the comics anymore, which for whatever reason I just do not see happening.

Buttmonkey is a really great observation. Have you ever re-watch Buffy a couple times (why am I even asking, lol) and realize that when you know where things are going, there is a CRAZY amount of foreshadowing, and not even just a couple of episodes before something would happen, often it could even be seasons earlier.

I like the Xander guess, just because I can't see Giles or Andrew acting in such a way, but I guess being a monkey for how ever many years could change your temperment....
