I was re watching Bargaining part 2 and Afterlife today and i realised something i hadn't before. After Buffy comes back, Dawn takes her back to the Summer's house to clean her up etc. Spike walks in and notices her hand....

SPIKE: Her hands.
DAWN: Um, I was gonna fix 'em. I don't know how they got like that.
SPIKE: I do. Clawed her way out of a coffin, that's how. (to Buffy) Isn't that right?
BUFFY: (quietly) Yeah. That's ... what I had to do.
SPIKE: Done it myself. Um ... We'll take care of you. Come here. (to Dawn) Get some stuff, uh, mercurochrome, bandages.
DAWN: Okay. (exits)

The thing that bothers me is i didn't think Spike had a funeral. I didn't think his mother even knew he was dead. In Fool for Love Spike/William's Mother asks him where he has been.

MOTHER: Where have you been? I've been beside myself for days.
WILLIAM: You needn't have worried, mother. You'll never have to worry about anything again. Something has happened. I've changed.
MOTHER: I-I don't- Who's this woman?
DRUSILLA: I'm the other that gave birth to your son.
MOTHER: I beg your pardon?
WILLIAM: It's true, mother. (holds out his hand to Drusilla, she takes his hand and walks forward) Drusilla-she...she has made me what I am. I am no longer bound to this mortal coil. I have become a creature of the night. A vampire.

So surely he never dug himself out of his own grave. All i can think is maybe Drusilla being old fashioned buried him privately like she did with Darla when she sired her in Angel.

Does anyone else have any ideas about this? Or am i just going crazy?

Yeah I think Drusilla buried him like she did with Darla, remember Angel saying something like 'Dru was a traditionalist.'

Yeah I would put money on the fact that Dru buried Spike and waited eagerly for him to arise, clapping her hands and dancing around a little and chanting nonsense the whole time!!

Woops, continuity error on the writers part 🙂 I bet they forgot the implication that Spike hadn't had a funeral... seems unlikely he would have had one without his mother knowing. My guess would be the same as the others. Dru buried him like she did Darla, in fresh earth of some kind.

But that doesn't mean he hasn't seen other vampires claw their ways out of coffins

Maybe there was an empty coffin in the graveyard and Dru seized the opportunity, lol! 🙂

Haaa you're posting again! :p
Dru buries Darla when she re-sires her. Angel knows that Dru will bury Darla because she is a "traditionalist". I don't think its such a leap to accept the suggestion that Dru buried Spike in a coffin and he had to claw his way out in a symbolic re-birth as a vampire. You don't need a funeral to be buried. Just a box and a hole in the ground and a crazy Sire to oversee everything.
