I was just rewatching "The Initiative" and there's something I just don't get. In the Angel episode "Why We Fight" Spike is made aware (rather forcefully) of the existance of government programs dedicated to capturing or harnessing the power of vampires and demons as early as the forties, But in "The Initiative" he seems baffled by the enitre concept, eventually believing that the Slayer is behind it all.

If he already knew there was a possibility of government interference, why did he think it was the Slayer who kidnapped him?

Well Why We Fight was made after the Initiative so we have to give lee-way. Maybe he just forgot, he had 60 years of crazy mudering and kinkiness between then.

I think it was just a conicidence...the Vamp next to Spike said that he was running from the Slayer, and Spike saw Buffy before he got zapped and taken away, so yeah...I would've jumped to that same conclusion myself if I were in his shoes...

Plus, you know, theres that whole age thing, and Spike's...old...

Totally agree with Lee here. I was thinking that if I were Spike, that's the same conclusion (initially at least) that I'd come to.

LOL Leeeee!!! 😀 😀

Yeah, i mean Spike is like my ultimate hero but even he admits he isn't the sharpest tool in the box! 😉

It's a little much to expect him to wake up in a cell with no idea how he got there or who was holding him and instantly connect it to something he found out on a submarine half a century earlier! 🙂

not only that. i don't know exactly how much spike knew of the initiative back in the 40's and from the little he dsid know (and i imagine that was not much), why would he really remember that instantly, especially having been drugged and whatnot?
maybe he put the pieces together in the end, maybe not, it remains unknown. but come on, in the end of the day, due to lack of better explanation - 100+ years of life experience and that one stays with him? doubt it.

As Spike said in "In the Dark"

"I may be a slow learner...but eventually I catch on."

Maybe Spike didn't think it was the same thing. He could've thought that those plans were long gone. And I bet he wasn't even paying attention when they were explaining it in "Why We Fight". He doesn't have the attention span.
