Uuhh...has anyone read this? I was not impressed, sad to say. Lynch sort of has Spike's lingo down, kinda, but not the spirit of the Buffyverse. The story's just odd, meandering.
I won't go into the plot, but Spike's allies are an invisible demon and a giant, hovering, telepathic fish. Just does not lend itself to exciting visual storytelling. The art was sloppy and murky.
I really hope Joss exerts a ton of influence on the Angel project. And they need a decent artist.

I'm always getting the sense (rightly or wrongly) that Joss doesn't care that much about the Angel characters anymore. There's just so much unexplored potential in the Illyria character, Angel and Spike working together more. Gunn (was he vamped?). Hmm. Fingers still crossed on the Angel book. I'm sure it'll set new records for IDW.
Speaking of art, good and bad...seems like most of the licensed Buffyverse art has been pretty weak, generic. Tales of the Slayers had a pretty good, interesting variety of styles.
And I just discovered my girl Pia Guerra (Brian K Vaughan's Y: The Last Man) submitted some Buffy pencils to Dark Horse way back when. So bummed they never used her. Love her clean, traditional style:

Even though the art is nice, I still prefer Jeanty, because he throws in all that interesting background stuff that makes you want to read a few times to make sure you get it all. It feels more Whedonverse that way. Does Pia know vampires only come out at night? I definitely prefer Pia to the guys I've seem from IDW though.
Although with Georges I wish he'd get over that phase of giving the characters little white eyes every once in a while. I don't know what the purpose of that is, but it cheapens it, and makes it look kiddy-cartoon if you ask me.

It's just the pencils, the skeleton of the piece. She'd need a good colorist to suggest the time of day (or night).
That's where it gets a little dicey with Georges for me too. The figures just kind of fall apart when he draws them small, all the detail goes away. But I like his craggy style for the most part. So damn picky with comic book art.
I noticed a couple of IDW artists (not really conventional comic art). Steph Stamb, kind of a cool cinematic style:

And Ashley Wood. Pretty amazing stuff. He's done Tank Girl, another series called Robots vs Zombies. Just very wild, stylized, painterly. Maybe it's all wrong, I'd love to see him take a stab at a cover for an Angel series.

I was planning to make one of my friends, who study abroad, buy me the Asylum comic book but I'm not that sure now...is it that bad? Can you recommend me another comic book about Spike or such that he's not just popping in?
That's a good question. I thought it was that bad. The story didn't play to Spike's strengths, IMO. And I find it hard to finish a story if the art's bad. This is the only Spike comic I've read, actually.
I think Peter David's a pretty good writer. He did Spike vs. Dracula. Also did Spike: Old Times.
And Scott Tipton wrote Spike: Old Wounds.
Dark Horse has done some Spike and Drusilla comics too. Again, didn't read. Anyone?

I read somewhere that James Marsters was very annoyed with the way the Spike & Dru comic books came out. That he wrote them first and then they all twisted it. So I didn't have the intention of reading them...but I don't know anything about the other three you mentioned.
That's actually what I was thinking"”when they showed the panels for Old Wounds (in that preview). It looks like something a sophisticated fan would create. Like they grabbed screen caps, drew and photoshopped over them. Interesting look, but kinda weird. Huh. The story does sound potentially good.

If this is true, then I hope that there is some way to bring Spike back to the "Buffy" series where he belongs, at least long enough to settle the "No you don't, but thanks for sayin' it" thing. I think it would be only fair to somehow allow Buffy to know that he is still "alive," the circumstances surrounding his return, why he couldn't come to find her, and to know that he is still fighting for the forces of Good, just the way Angel has continued to do in his series.
Should they be back together on a more or less permanent basis? I say absolutely, but even if it isn't to be, there are still a lot of places that he could fit in with the new storyline. He could set up/train a crew of young Slayers somewhere, or he could team up with Faith to travel around the world doing freelance work. There wouldn't have to be any romance involved (although a strong undercurrent of sexual tension would fit in between the two), and the drinking sessions between the two could be at the least lead to some wildly comedic scenes. It would be great if that led to the spinoff series Joss planned for the two, and I just think that they would make a good kickass team._

I read the Asylum book, and I enjoyed the story, though I couldn't really rave about it. It was too much like "Tango and Cash" for me to get really enthused (also Stallone didn't have a giant guppy floating around with him).

My Favorite of the Angel/Spike books so far has probably been Spike: Old Times, and Spike: Lost and Found. I really thought that they got the voices of the characters, as well as the feel of the Angelverse down quite well. I also very much loved Spike vs Dracula. It was great silly fun. Probably my favorite mini-series thus far. Most of the Angel coics have disappointed me so far. It's a shame too, because Angel is probably my favorite character (tied with Xander), and Spike, well, not so much.
The character spotlights have been good overall though, especially the Wes, Connor and Illyria ones. (Didn't like Spike in the Wes one, but Wes hiself was good enough to make up for it.)
