Spike Bangin' the Bad Guy

So IDW's Angel #32 has Spike catching a lady vampire in a pool of dead people's blood, feasting. He proceeds to take her up to the bedroom, have sex with her, and then when he's through, he ties her up, gets information out of her, then kills her.

Out of character for Spike? (keep in mind it's set in 2005 LA a few months after the Angel season 5 finale)

As cor whether or not having sex with another vampire, especially a beautiful, famous, star of stage and screen vampire, I think that we might grant him a little leeway in that particular instance. It would be like having sex with Brad Pitt or Jessica Alba, (or whatever celebrity that you might care to substitute there) depending on which gender takes your fancy. A temptation that anyone would be strongly tempted to succumb to. And remember, Spike was portrayed as a highly sensual man. With the one exception of the coitus interruptus episode with Harmony when he first became corporeal again, it's been a VERY long dry spell for him. I think that he could be forgiven one single episode, and almost certainly a few curtain calls tossed in for good measure. What I find out of character is that god-awful set of boxers. Spike has always been portrayed as going commando, and I can't see any reason for a change at this point.

Is he in dark time like Angel in Ats season 2? If he did it just for fun, I think it's out of character.

Despite the fact that I don't consider this canon in the slightest I think there is absolutely NO WAY any of us fans can claim any sort of knowledge as to what Spike's (or any character for that matter) sexual preferences or claim that we know what to expect from his sex life.

The way I see it is that we as fans know Spike about as well as his closest friends, maybe slightly more because we are privvy to situations that they are not. So I say think about it this way, think of your absolute closest friend on the planet and now ask yourself if you know what they are capable of sexually speaking? Do you know what they do? What they like? What their moral stand point is with sex?

The only person who can know that is your friend, just as you are the only person who can know where you stand. Even then, you can heat of the moment situations.

My point is, when it comes to sex, anything is possible so it is impossible to be OOC.

I haven't read the issue, just heard some of his behavior in this arc, but that doesn't sound out of character. Specially since I heard that in this arc he's... focused on sex.

It's definitly not a healthy choice, but he's not exactly a healthy person in a healthy situation, from what I gather.

Newley souled, a bit lost, without direction I suppose, been killing bad guys and girls for months now.

Of course, it's hard to say what is and what is not out of character for Spike. We haven't gotten to know him very well, not well enough for me to say what he would or wouldn't do. I've seen the nice side, the cocky side, the funny side, the loyal side and the heroic side of this "new" vamp, and kind of want those to be his only side, but the demon is still in him, and for all I know (not having read past issue 27) he got noone around him that will tell him to "behave", or that he feels the need to impress. If Buffy or Fred was around, he might not have slept around at all, specially not with a girl he plans to kill, but noone's there for him. I don't blame him for doing that.

I might change my mind when I catch up with the series, but I'm not that surprised. I'm not even sure if I would be surprised if he rapes bad guys then kills them. I have no idea where he is emotionally right now, but I'm guessing he's indifferent or/and or hurting.

That's very true, I'd say Spike's the only legit Champion left on the team (Angel was MIA when this happened). Connor & Gunn are both going through some changes at the moment.

I'd say this is the best explanation I've heard. It just seems to me that this is the first thing Spike's done since he left Sunnydale that would disgust Buffy, even if they weren't together. Plus no one even mentioned that this was so morally dubious.

That's the thing, he seems like the only one of the team that's in a better place than ever. He is super-sexually charged though. More-so than ever, imo.

He's in a good place? Hm... I read a blog post by a IDW editor, saying that they had big plans for Spike, so it seems like his behavior might be a part of a bigger arc. Maybe big emotional and personal development, and this behavior is a step on the way?

Kind of creepy that's he's act like this when he's in a good mood. I'd rather have him acting out because he's not happy with himself, I don't want this to be "normal" for him.

I hate the new Spike. A lot of fans like the fact that he is his "own man" now and choosing to be a Champion instead of doing it out of love of Buffy. But he just seems too much like Fan Fiction Spike post-Chosen. I can't believe this is the same Spike from BtVS S6 & 7.

Buffyverse Fan agrees: I think Cris Ryall was talking about the upcoming Spike series, which will run alongside the Angel series. This instance wasn't even treated as anything significant

Hmm. Well, I don't read the IDW comics, but this does seem very out of character to me. They're not canon, so...

Just confirms why I don't read the IDW Angel series. Sounds like they'd just anger me with what they're doing with Spike's characterization.

See that's the thing, I wouldn't call any of his lines very out of character, but cumulatively they make him into a different guy.

80-90% of his dialog are speeches about how "horny" and/or "sexy" he is:

SPIKE (Angel #30): "When I turn on the charm who can resist (eying Kate). There's more than one way to pierce a woman's heart with dangerous wood, if you catch my meaning. [This is after he spent three panels describing how handsome he is, saying Kate's close to being as sexy as himself, but she's not quite there]."

SPIKE (Angel #29): "...Can you go into more detail there? Can you describe their lips, their eyes, their breasts?"

SPIKE (Angel #28): "...But did their overly attractive Den Mother give me a proper Hero's "Thank You"? No, she certainly did not. How HOT is the client? And does she need immediate comforting?"

See, not OOC by themselves, but when you take into account that his ONLY lines in 4 of the last 5 issues are about his libido, it makes him into a different character. He's far from the clever insightful guy that everyone loves.

I had to stop reading the AtS comics because I just couldn't take it. That was not the Spike that I loved from BtVS. I don't get how anyone can think he has "matured" or come into himself as a character. That is not evolution. I'd rather have complex Love's Bitch Spike than depthless Don Juan. 🙁
