Spike Fans - Do you prefer him in BTVS or Angel?

I personally thought he was better in Angel, for me ti was mainly because he got to be himself without most of the Buffy crap.
 
BtVS. Too many great episodes vs pretty much only one season on Angel. I didn't really care for the whole Spike's fading away storyline or Spike's a ghost. I loved seeing him on Angel don't get me wrong, I just love remembering him in Chosen when he truly became a hero. Also I love his chemistry with the rest of the scooby gang as well.
 
This is a tough one. I think that Spike was at his absolute best on Angel. Through all the character arcs over all the seasons, Spike's run on Angel was my favorite of anything he did.

Mostly, this is because of his chemistry with Angel. I thought that the Spike/Angel dynamic was, by far actually, Spike's best chemistry with anyone in either series, including Buffy. They worked so well together, the actors by that point were so entrenched and solidified in their roles as Angel and Spike and they brought out the absolute best in one another. In particular, I thought Spike's presence brought out some of the best humor from Angel. I've always had the feeling David Boreanaz is a really funny guy when he wants to be, but the Angel character doesn't always suit that. Having Spike there allowed that part of him to shine, and at it's best it was gold.

Arc wise Spike's wasn't drop-dead incredible or anything during S5 of Angel, but he was kind of the ultimate supporting character. I liked him as the male lead on the various seasons of Buffy but thought he rocked it during S5.

However, Spike was superb on BTVS. Especially in S4 and S5, he was teh best part of that show for quite a while, and was the saving grace in more than one or two episodes.

I usually prefer him on Angel. His dynamic with Angel is amazing and I prefer Spike when he's not with Buffy, to be honest. It had nothing to do with the ship, it's just that his character stands on its own and he has space to be himself.
 
As much as I enjoyed Spike's relationship with Buffy, I have to admit that I preferred him as a character in Season 5 of "Angel," ant for exactly the same reason that I liked Angel more on his own show than in Sunnydale. In both cases, on Buffy's show, they were at best her lovers and sidekicks, and in more than a few episodes,not even her principal sidekick. They were there strictly to support her, and that's fine, of course, because it is, of course, her show.

The first 4 seasons of his own show established Angel as his own man/vampire, and, while he certainly did do some things wrong, and some that were downright stupid, he grew, evolved, and developed into a real hero. Then comes Season 5, and Spike literally materializes out of thin air, already established as an independent character, and a Champion to boot, and in no way Angel's subordinate, sidekick,comedy relief, or even friend. Spike and Angel share (as much as can be shared on a show whose title is the name of the undisputed "main" character) the spotlight, even to the point of pushing some of the other characters' parts out of the way to make room for the new guy. Spike and Angel aren't friends, and never will be. They don't like each other, and never will. But they become allies, comrades in arms, and equals to a far greater degree than Angel had ever been with any of his other costars, or either ever was with Buffy. They aren't Batman and Robin, they're more like a crossover with Green Arrow and Hawkeye, with fangs instead of those sissy little bows. So close to being equal that it's impossible to tell which one really is the biggest bad.
 
I loved the way he grew in btvs and the whole spuffy thing, so I chose btvs. I liked seeing him return on Angel, but without his buffy dynamic it wasn't as fun, I like the side she brought out in him

He was a one-sided supporting character on Angel, but the male lead on BtVS for the last three seasons.
Angel, although I did like him in season 2 of Buffy.

BTVS.

In ATS he was funny and had some great moments. I loved his interaction with Fred first and Illyria after, and I liked his (un)friendship with Angel. But overall I felt like he had regressed and often acted out of character, compared to what he had became in BTVS season 7. I think Angel brought out the worst in him (and vice versa) because of the mutual jealousy and I often thought they acted like two babes. Yes, it was fun, but still not fitting for their "˜champion' role.

In BTVS I loved his growth, the slow, deep, evolution that we get to see, step by step. Yes, he had a lot of low moments but I loved the changes he made... what he became, what he did, how he tried (am I quoting? Lol). I loved the way he loved, totally and unconditionally. I loved his interaction with Giles (pity, it was so scarce), his bickering with Xander, his friendship with Dawn. And above all "“ surprise, surprise 😀 - I loved his love story with Buffy. It was for the most part bitter, painful, dramatic but than became sweet and tender and romantic. I've always felt it like something real. Not a fairy tale like most of the love story we see on TV, but realistic and true.

I love Spike in all his forms, but I prefer him in Buffy. In Buffy, he came full-circle, his character development was rich, and he played an important role in the story.

In contrast, in Angel, Spike is basically Angel's sidekick, and his role is reduced largely to comic relief.

That said, now, don't get me wrong, I adore his interactions with Angel, and learning more about their history together, but overall not a satisfying series for Spike fans.

S2 and 3 of BtVS was my favorite Spike. That badass, didn't care what he did or didn't do. He was a great villain and I wish they'd kept him like that. I didn't mind him so much in S4, but he wasn't the same, reduced to comic relief that he didn't suit. S5 and onwards was just terrible, his awful 'kicked-puppy' lovesick fool crap, it took away everything that made Spike him. And don't even get me started on S6.

In Angel, he was better, when he got out of Buffy's shadow after his heroic end to BtVS, but I think that should have been THE end. He died a hero, died protecting people, saving the world. I wish that had been it for him.

Souless Spike was at his best in season 2 of 'Buffy'.

Soul-having (Soulful?) Spike was at his best on 'Angel'.

I loved the addition of Spike to 'Angel'. I loved seeing him without Buffy around. He had great banter with Angel and a fairly sweet relationship with Fred.

But villain Spike in the early seasons of 'Buffy' was just classic.

wow! well said I completely agree with that statement. I love the growth of spike on that show and his evolving relationship with buffy had it all as you mentioned.

I disagree and I think someone said it best on this thread. Spike and Angel are comrades in arms. Spike and Angel were like sidekicks to Buffy but I believe in s5 of ATS Spike is in no way Angels subordinate. They are equals.
 
Spike was good in Buffy S2, and a little in S&5.. but as soon as he started to fancy buffy, he got boring and i HATED him in Angel... absolutely pointless!! I really dont understand why they killed him off in Buffy only to bring him back a week later on Angel!!
 
It was a toss up which series I preferred him in, but his mannerisms and how he talked in the new Sunnydale high was the clincher for me, that and the importance of Angel being in the series, or as Spike knew him, Captain Forehead.
It's a shame Darla died, I'm sure we could have had half an episode of Spike and Darla coming up with names for Angel.
 
I loved the dynamic between Spike and Angel in AtS. I also liked watching how Spike developed in BtVS.
I have to say I think AtS is my favorite because it showed a culmination and continuation of Spike away from Buffy. How he regressed in some ways (particularly to do with his rivalry with Angel), but also progressed (particularly (paradoxically), his rivalry with Angel, and his relationship with Fred). I really wish the show had continued. (No, I don't really count the comics, just my personal preferences)
