Spike in Angel v Spike in Buffy

I'm having a re-watch (thank you SyFy) and I am really enjoying Spike again. I loved him when he was introduced in Season 2 and I liked him in Season 4 but after that he started to grate on me.

I don't know if it was meeting James that did it or how the character developed within the group but I became seriously disinterested.

Now when I am watching him on Angel in Season 5 I am truly loving him again. Perhaps it is because of the different characters but I actually enjoying seeing him on screen again.

What version of Spike does everyone else prefer?
 
I prefer the more nuanced character he played in Buffy. In Angel he just seemed like a Cordelia replacement and provided a bit of comic relief more than anything substantial. I liked watching his evolution throughout Buffy and obviously as someone who likes Spuffy I enjoyed their relationship progression as well.
 
I don't have a preference because he's the same on both shows to me. Only difference is on AtS, his focus is not on Buffy, it's on pissing off Angel. I like him equally in both shows. 🙂

I'm curious, how did meeting James make you uninterested in Spike? (If that was indeed the case)
 
I like season 2-6 Spike on Buffy and Spike on Angel. He kind of irritated me in season 7. If I had to choose...I'd say I like season 2-6 Spike better. He was kind of just there for a laugh on Angel haha.
 
For me I love Spike in season 2 of Buffy, then just like you mentioned come season 4 he starts to grate on me, he's still enjoyable at times but really... for me he should have been gone after that season.

Season 5-7 of Buffy I mostly find his character to be highly overrated.
But season 5 of Angel I love him again, he's a fresh breath to the show and brings the same interesting dynamic that he brought in Buffy s2 but that then fizzled out in my opinion

That may be one of the main reasons why I prefer him more on Angel.

It was back in my Con days and the things I saw and the things I heard (from close friends that I trust) it put me right off him.
 
I liked Spike from his first scene in "School Hard" in Season 2 until the finale of Season 5 of "Angel." What I liked about the character throughout that time is that he was never the same for very long. He was a work in progress, always evolving, changing, moving from the darkness into the light. I have heard quite a few people, here and other places, say that they loved Spike when he was evil, but lost interest in him once he became fixated on Buffy. If that were the case, they would have had to lose interest in him from the moment that he first appeared in the Bronze in Season 2, because he was ALWAYS fixated on her. Buffy and Spike are like the two poles of a magnet, always attracted to each other, and the closer they get, the stronger that attraction becomes.

I love him on BtVS much more that on AtS. On AtS writers used about 20% of his potential. He was mostly there to annoy Angel. The scale of his personality was diminished to service Angel's story. On BtVS he was de-facto male lead. On AtS he was just a sidekick.
 
I liked him up until S5 and then from S6 to the end in BtVS. And in Ats he was just awesome!!! Like the little brother constantly annoying his big bro and getting involved in everything without really wanting to. So appart from BtVS S5, I always loved him 😀
 
I love Spike season 2 of Buffy and season 5 BEFORE he realised he was in love with Buffy. IMO Spike lost his edge when he fell in love with her and it ruined Spike for me.

I love him in season 5 of Angel once Buffy was out of the picture.

I'm up to season 7 and I don't enjoy Spike in this season.
 
I love Spike through all the seasons, but my very favourite Spike is AtS S5 Spike. C'mon, he's soulful, snarky, still in love with Buffy, and did I mention the only non-canon ship I ship is Spangel? Waaait a minute, not non-canon. (Just that one time, after all. 😛)

Ditto.

I love Spike in BtVS a lot more than I do in AtS. I think he was more interesting and well developped in Buffy, more notably in seasons 5, 6 & 7. I loved the duality good/bad he had to face with the chip and his love for Buffy, it was complex and really interesting. I also loved the way they dealt with his character and his new soul, we got great episodes like Lies my parents told me (I find his relationship with his mother really fascinating, I think it explains a lot about who he is).

I liked him in AtS, for the way he grew and started to find himself and his purpose without Buffy, but most of the time, I didn't feel that it was his place. Him and Angel were acting in a very immature way sometimes, I got the feeling that they emphasized humor, more than anything else. I would have love to see Cordelia or Faith, rather than him.
 
I prefer Spike before he was chipped. I liked the more badass, evil Spike we got before Season 5 of BtVS. I still thought he was a funny, interesting character, but I thought he should have stayed a villain.

Villain Spike is so awesome
I like Buffy season 2 Spike most with season 5 ANGEL Spike taking second place. In season 2 he was a total badass. He came across as a leading man. Though as soon as Angelus showed up he was forever see as "second" to someone. Buffy, Angel, he even took orders from Willow and was made look weak compared to Riley (I REALLY dislike that Riley never got to understand how dangerous Spike truly is)

In season 5 of ANGEL he started to find new purpose and find life after Buffy like Angel did. Plus we got some fantastic Spike-centered episodes!

I hated Spike in late season 4 and early season 5 because the writers had no clue how to add him to every episode. He just happened to be wherever Buffy or one of the Scoobies were! (Like that episode where Xander get's split into two Xanders and Spike's randomly at the city dump)

I liked him in season 6 because it was his and Buffy's story that made Buffy dark toned again. Though I do see him as a creep taken advantage of an extremely depressed Buffy.

I loved his newly souled self in season 7 and him rebuilding his friendship with Buffy.

So i'd rank my favourite Spike like this:

5: Late season 4 - Early season 5
4: Early season 4 - Late season 5
3: Season 6 - Season 7
2: ANGEL SEASON 5
1: Season 2 - Season 3
