Spike, Sacrifice, and the End of "Chosen"

A discussion going on in a different thread made me wonder:

If, for whatever reason, someone else (Faith, Giles, your Aunt Mildred) had been in that scene with Spike, would he have still sacrificed himself to save the world? Did he do it because Buffy needed/asked him to? Had he come along far enough in his selflessness and desire to do true good to sacrifice himself simply because the survival of the world depended on it?

Yes. Buffy asked him to leave with her, but he didn't. Because closing the Hellmoth was more important to him than be with Buffy (which he might have been after that if hadn't died). Buffy never asked him to wear the amulet, or die, or save the world. That was all hin. Like I said in that other thread, if he's dead, what would it matter? He wouldn't be able to be with Buffy anyway, or even be around her, see her. Nothing. If that had anything to do with Buffy, it's where he wanted to give her normal life. By closing the Hellmouth completely, Buffy could be a normal girl. And that's what the ending was supposed to show. You know, if the comics wouldn't have brought Buffy back to her non normal life 🙂

Yes also. I feel like if Buffy had died earlier in Season 7 (purely hypothetical here) he still would have gone into battle with the others and would have been just as willing to sacrifice himself for the rest of the world.

We saw Spike stay and protect Dawn and the Scoobies between Seasons 5 and 6, when, as far as he knew, he would never see Buffy again, simply because, as he said, he "made a promise to a lady." I think that he would have honored that promise even at the cost of his own life, with neither regrets nor hesitation, simply because it was the right thing to do, despite the fact that, as far as he knew, Buffy was gone forever and would never know what he had done, one way or the other. He stayed in Sunnydale because he was needed, and it was the right thing to do. He could have ran off to a monastery for the summer, the way that another supposed champion did, but that wouldn't have been the right thing to do.

If, by whatever circumstance, Buffy had never returned from heaven, and he had found in the hellmouth under those same circumstances, yes, I honestly believe that, whether he had regained his soul or not, he would have stayed to "see how it all turns out" because he was a Champion, and that's what Champions do. Because it's the right thing to do.

And, besides, he had made a promise to a lady.
