I don't know if this has been addressed here on not, but it got me thinking. On the commentaries, I think, it was said that Spike was supposed to be killed off in season 2. Which got me to thinking about how adversely the show's direction would've changed. Season 4 would've been mildly different. 5, as well. 6, he's an intregal part of the whole arc for Buffy. And 7, he destroys the hellmouth, essientially saving the world. So, my question is, what direction would the show have gone in if he had not survived? Curious as to what people think...

Without Spike in Season 4 and beyond, Riley might have lasted a bit longer, possibly through the end of Season 5 (maybe he could've jumped instead of Buffy, it's the kind of thing he'd been conditioned for by the Army, after all. The old "throw yourself over the hand grenade in order to save your buddies," scenario.) If that happened, there would have to be someone else come along for Season 6 and 7, someone to be the new love interest for Buffy and/or watch her back in a fight. Maybe they could've brought Faith back and she could've convinced everyone that she had, indeed, reformed. (Chill out, Fuffies, I'm not proposing any Slayer/Slayer snuggling here, just a return to how the girls were before Faith went bad) Those aren't major changes, and the basic curve of the series could've been kept pretty well intact.

yeah but if Riley jumped into the portal, he wouldn't have closed it. so i don't think he would have done so. And yeah, Riley would last longer and either later a new love interest or just pretty much single buffy i guess. But, if buffy still died in 5 and came back she'd REALLY be alone in the beginning of 6. and um...7 would focus WAY more on potentials and maybe having the first influence more of them, since spike wouldn't be around to play around with. And angel would have to come back in the end to save the world, if it still followed the whole "ensouled" thing... but he couldn't die because then he couldn't go back to his show. ooo the complications. maybe they would have just written a different way for it to happen.

The writers could've figured out a way for Riley to have closed the portal if it had come to that. I was just trying to dispose of him somehow and avoid Buffy's death, which would've resulted in a Season 6 not quite so dark.
i read this suggestion some time ago that if Spike had been killed off as originally intended then:

Angelus would not have got sent to and returned from a Hell dimension - he would have stayed Angelus
Angelus would have been chipped by the initative and set himself up as the slayers reluctant ally
When Buffy died and came back it would have been to Angelus she would have turned to deal with her existence (and season six would have been extra dark)
Mixed in amoungst all this would have been a slowly building relationship between buffy and Xander (as was, i've seen suggested, was the original intent)
Xander would have left Anya at the alter because he was in love with Buffy
Angelus would have fallen in love with Buffy
Angelus would have sought out his soul
Angelus would have died in the hellmouth (not wearing a magical amulet) to allow Buffy to live leaving Buffy and Xander to live happily ever after.

No Ats? AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I wouldn't have liked that as all of what happened with Spike was more believable because it's more consistent than it is with Angelus who who little to no humanity in him. Spike always had a soft side which is why it was more believable.

Don't worry about the "no Ats," Faith would've gotten the sponoff and she would've taken Spike with her.

I actually dont think I would have mind that at all. But I must say I rather liked it the way it was 🙂

Now that was an inspired idea. I never looked at it from that perspective. To me, that seems to flow better and wouldn't have been as, for lack of a better word, contrived.
