Robin contemplated revenge for the death of his mother by luring Spike to a place where he can kill him. Am I the only one that felt a bad taste to know that all what Robin got was a beating from Spike when he had every reason to be angry with him? Robin I thought should have beaten Spike but decided to spare him seeing the noble side of him now that he has a soul.

There is an old saying:

"If you want revenge, begin by digging two graves."

implying one grave for the intended victim and one for the perpetrator of the revenge. Robin was lucky to survive that particular meeting. It was a good plot device for neutralizing the trigger implanted by the First.

Ethan Reigns said it perfectly. If you're willing to get into the whole revenge ordeal, you have to be able to deal with what's coming at you.

That being said, I would have done the same if I was Wood, but it's still his fault he got beaten up. You don't bite more than you can chew. He instigated it, and I don't see anything wrong with someone retaliating or self-defence (albeit Spike did go too far).

I have to agree about the coat. Spike continuing to wear it after he knew who Robin really was could be considered bad taste. Unfortunately, that coat has been established as being as much an integral part of Spike as Mr Pointy is to Buffy, so just tossing it would have been bad, as well.

As for Robin's justification in trying to kill Spike, it's no more valid than Holtz's vendetta against Angel because Angelus killed his family. Understandable at first, certainly, but if we have to accept the fact that Angel is a character different from the soulless monster known as Angelus, therefore not responsible for Angelus' crimes, then we have to allow Spike the same consideration, despite the lack of name change. Buffy tried to explain that to Robin, but he simply refused to accept it, exactly the same way that Holtz refused to accept the same thing about Angel.

It's not the same, Spike doesn't feel an ounce of remourse for killing Wood's Mom. Angel felt sorrow for what he (and Darla) did to Holtz.
