Spike's attempted rape

In order to understand the true implications of the attempted rape scene in Seeing Red, you need to know the real-life inspiration behind it. It was actually inspired by a situation involving a member of the BtVS crew who once tried to use sex to force someone to come back into their life. The writers reversed the situation (making it a male [Spike] as the aggressor rather than a female as the aggressor as happened in the real-life situation upon which the AR was based).

I hated Joss for doing the attempt rape scene cause it made me hate Spike...he was meant to love Buffy and he tries to rape her..She ended the relestionship he should of understund that she didnt want him..yer he was angry but still he shouldn't of done that. I was just shocked that Buffy didnt stake him..I know she had feelings for him..what I didnt get was when he she found out he had a soul she just forgot that he tried to rape her.

The problem with that is, that if a girl tries to force you, you push her off, but a girl can't do that to a guy ... so they failed in that perspective.

who says a girl cant push a guy off? everyone has different streangths, some girls may be weaker then guys, some guys weaker then girls.

Buffy may have used Spike but she did make it perfectly known that she was useing him and he knew it he just didnt except it and continued to let her use him and he wasnt exactly innocent in all of this, he tried to get Buffy to have sex with him plently times in S6 like in the Bronze, she didnt come to him he came to her and he wanted it more while telling her how she didnt fit with her friends anymore how she fit in the dark now with him...

It's interesting that many have focused more on Spike's attempted rape of Buffy than on Buffy's near rape attempt of Spike in "Gone", Warren's attempted rape of Katrina in "Dead Things", and Willow's rape of Tara in "All the Way" and the Scoobies in general in "Tabula Rasa". And many have forgotten Xander's attempted rape of Buffy in "The Pack".

omg please dont tell me you are trying to use those situations as rape? First of all,Spike let Buffy where as in this episode Spike was litterly forcing himself on her while she was screaming for him to get off of her and stop. We arent even discussing Warren because I dont care about him at all, I know he is a little pig but he is dead now and in hell. Willow trying to rape Tara? hmm alrighty then I dont think so I never saw any forcing of anything or screaming or oh none of that espically since in Tabula Rasa Willow didnt try to force Tara to have sex, she wanted Tara to forget about their fight.... and wow Xander trying to rape Buffy in "The Pack" I mustve been off in la la land when he tried to rape her and force her to have sex.

It's going back to the metaphor that "all men are beasts". Spike was insane in his love. Love blinds you right? He tried to rape her 'cause he wanted her to love him, but she didn't. She believed she used him and that she can't love anything without a soul. Buffy loved Angel, but Angelus was a different matter. He didn't want Buffy to love him. He wanted to torture her and destroy her love for Angel. Angelus and Spike are different. Whenever soulless Spike is hurt by love, his mind isn't stable. Remember Dru? Buffy had it more aggressive. Because Spike didn't have a soul, he was blinded and he didn't have voices in his head to tell him not to hurt Buffy. He wasn't stable. Angelus knew exactly what he was trying to do.

I think the rape attempt is more to highlight Spike's change after he gets his soul. It's always been sed that vampires can't love without a soul but up until that point Spike had never done anything to prove it. I think the rape attempt showed that Spike was more obsessed with Buffy than actually in love with her. And after he gets his soul, the relationship is more special, you see a distinct difference in Spike.

Its more emotional than anything.
Knowing Spike had to go to THAT level to get Buffy.
I was quite shocked, and strangely, was very teary when I watched it, for Buffy's sake, because you could tell she was upset (who wouldnt be?) but its the way she was screaming, and if I remember correctly, there was no music, which was chilling.

For some reason, I was more angry at Buffy then at Spike, and even felt much more sorry for Spike then Buffy.

Rape is a crime of anger! He was angry that he couldn't have her! He knew that she didn't love him and he wanted her to feel the pain that he was feeling! I don't condone it in any way! But just thinking about it now, I noticed that Joss managed to pretty much make the whole rape idea disappear and concentrate on the importance of Spike's soul!

Okay, let's clarify something: it ONLY became an attempted rape after Spike didn't stop when Buffy said 'stop' and she was forced to physically push him off of her (injured though she was). That is, essentially, the definition of what a rape/attempted rape is.

Same here

Truth be told, I didn't even considered it attempted rape until someone mentioned it, don't know why though

Why I side with Spike: He wasn't in a stable state of mind when he did this. All he wanted was Buffy's love and he didn't understand why she didn't love him. He would give her everything... and she used him.

Why I side with Buffy: She reconized that she shouldn't keep using him if she never felt for soulless Spike. That was that. She stopped seeing him and it was clear she didn't want him to be there. She said stop and he didn't stop.

What's more severe? Buffy's emotional abuse of Spike or Spike's physical abuse of Buffy?

Well, I was with a group of friends when I saw it the first time. And I was throwing things at the TV screaming "DONT YOU HURT MY BUFFY! ILL KICK YOUR ASS!" but now that I look back on it, it's some what of a big deal, but then again it wasn't really.

Wow, this is a great discussion! I love reading what you all have to say. So insightful! You all rock!

Oh, the thing I said about Angelus in comparison to Spike was only in defense of those that use the rape scene as a reason why Angel is better. I was just trying to point that out.

I see what you mean Allycat.

Slayerangel, great break down...and point...with that last post. I agree.

The AR is a big deal. It was probably one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen on dramatic TV (as opposed to the news) in a while. SMG and JM get big nods for acting so good that I can imagine that this is how an actual rape situation goes down.

There is a thread on Inside Out that defines soul in the Buffyverse. In it, it is theorized that the conscience of a person can be jolted back into operation by a serious enough act or situation, and Faith is used as an example of someone who had it happen. I think this is what happened with Spike here. The only conscience he had without a soul was the chip. It didn't work with Buffy. His AR was the catalyst for his conscience to start working again. This in turn compelled him to get back his soul, since a conscience working without a soul to back it up is painful and pretty much useless.

Also, it was a convenient way to kill Spuffy once and for all, considering there was some contention at ME about the relationship.

Lastly, I know this is a TV show, and we know a real rape didn't occur, but I'm a little distressed about the number of posters who shrug this off or even lay some of the blame at Buffy's door. No means no. Speaking as a male, if a woman isn't interested enough or enthusiastic enough to say "Yes", then I want no part of her until she is, if ever. I'll take what is freely given, and nothing more.
