The AR is a big deal. It was probably one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen on dramatic TV (as opposed to the news) in a while. SMG and JM get big nods for acting so good that I can imagine that this is how an actual rape situation goes down.
There is a thread on Inside Out that defines soul in the Buffyverse. In it, it is theorized that the conscience of a person can be jolted back into operation by a serious enough act or situation, and Faith is used as an example of someone who had it happen. I think this is what happened with Spike here. The only conscience he had without a soul was the chip. It didn't work with Buffy. His AR was the catalyst for his conscience to start working again. This in turn compelled him to get back his soul, since a conscience working without a soul to back it up is painful and pretty much useless.
