anna8, if you don't believe in compassion and forgivness then by that same logic Angel should be dusted too. Hell, he tried to KILL her...and ok he was souless then but so was Spike. I'm not saying it's right but all of this character bashing for the last half of this thread by some of you is getting real tired. Yes, Spike did wrong. Yes, he should be responsible for that and he was. Some of you choose to entirely ignore anything that happened beyond that episode and I say hey great, fine. But I have a feeling that it's mostly because some of you just don't like Spike anyway and not because of this in particular. So if your going to bash him at least look at which characters your standing behind before you do it.

But this argument has been discussed in a few threads and I think we know how most of you feel by now. Please only post if you have something new to add. These threads are all looking the same and it's begining to irritate a lot of people. You only have to express hate for a character once for us to get it. I understand that rape is a very REAL topic in general but lets not get that far into it here. Lines get crossed and things go too far when you're involving characters that people identify with. Maybe starting another thread on Rape in general would yield better results. 🙂

Rayne and Magui brought up a good point, so I'm going to spin this in another direction. Can Spike (or anyone, for that matter), receive forgiveness for such a despicable act? They can ask for forgiveness, but what criteria should be met for forgiveness to be given? Did Spike getting a soul, and presumably feeling the guilt he deserved to feel for the attempted rape, qualify him for forgiveness? Do you think he needs to do anyting else to qualify? Like Rayne said, don't just hide behind the "It was bad, he must die" thing...he didn't. What would that character have to do to be absolved? Opinions!

Oh, I don't think you were. I think that it was wrong and I also think he can be forgiven. I feel that it was pretty obvious that Spike regreted what he did. I could see how messed he was over it. He took it upon himself to travel all the way to Africa was it...to fight in those nasty trials to get his soul back. (Yes I know it seemed like he got it back against his will but they just told James to play it that way because they didn't know which way they were going to take it but it's supposed to be assumed that he intended for it so deal) He fought and he tried and he did what he could. I think he was redeemed in Buffy's eyes for that. And those are the eyes that mattered with this.

If he tried to rape me I would have killed him. 😛 That was very rude of Spike. but w/e.

Spike was obviously wrong to try and rape Buffy but his Obsession with Buffy grew and she was rejecting him whcih didn't help.

Ocourse it was wrong, there could not possibly be anything that wasn't wrong about it. But he was so screwed up at the time it seemed like he didn't really think or understand his own actions to well.

It was a huge deal... I just saw it for the first time today... and whoever said he didn't know what he is doing, that is bull crap he knew exactly what he was doing thats why when he went home he said he should have done it.... he is just sick, I believe he did love her, and he was just pissed cause she wanted nothing to do with him... he knew exactly what he was doing...

Yup, and she is the only one who could forgive him. She was the victim, and Spike really only had to make amends to her, no matter what anyone else (Xander) thought.

I watched "Seeing Red" again today and he seemed really torn. I don't believe that he did it on purpose, but he did do it out of insanity of his Buffy obsession. It's sick. It's sick and it's wrong. Buffy did keep messing with his emotions, so she sort of brought it on herself... Then again, Buffy has been through a lot... No one is truly the bad guy in that situation, but it is a big deal.

Ooo, treading on thin ice here! We covered my opinion on the "she brought it on herself" point of view, and again I say, "No woman EVER brings it on herself".

Wicked acting though, don't you think?

SMG is a great actress, so she plays the hurt so well!

Buffy is the victim in this case, for she didn't want it and didn't expect it, but I'm saying that her previous actions had played some part in Spike's assault, for she drove him mad, but didn't mean to. Spike is both the bad guy and somewhat innocent of this, not that rape can be justified, but he wouldn't intentionally usually hurt Buffy like that. He was driven mad by his love and couldn't understand why she couldn't love him. This situation is twisted...
