I'm hearing a lot of fans saying they were disaapointed that the Spuffy scenes lacked luster. Let me remind you that Spuffy has never been about the epic or theatrics. Rather, it's the small moments, the subtle nature that make Spuffy
real.
Something kind of interesting popped into my head after getting caught up on the comics.
Part of what's great about Ats and BtVS is they emphasize that part of what makes these people champions is the darkness inside them. Spike and Angel are able to understand evil and to use that against it. Buffy certainly has a lot of darkness inside her which is one of the reasons she's the best.
So when Buffy calls Spike her dark place; she's referencing how he was the one who got her through season seven; and at least to this Spuffy, implying that he is himself her hero, champion (passing the amulet to him said as much.)

a lot. Also, for me, by calling him her "dark place" she's acknowledging the strength that he gave her that helped her pull through that dark time. His light pierced her dark. Notice their dream-kiss is bathed in light.
Also, in terms of the darkness inside of them, that's a big theme with Spuffy. Light and dark. Also, fire. You see that imagery all through their journey. I could think of a million examples. The point is that it was the mutual darkness inside of them that brought them together, and yes, what makes them the best. But they can also reject that darkness, or funnel it for good use. Spike rejected the demon inside of him, and reclaimed his humanity (getting a soul). Buffy rejected the hardness and depression and found her way back to her friends, with Spike's help and support she won her war. Most importantly, she found her way back to love, in the form of Spike. Darkness rejects love. But Spike and Buffy reject the darkness.
As for Angel, he's doomed, clearly.
