Spike's "grave"

Yesterday I was watching After Life and a thought came skipping into my mind when Spike comments on Buffy's hands. They are bloody, and Spike says he knows it's from digging out of a grave. He tried it himself.
But did he really?
William was never buried. Drusilla sired him, and in Lies my parents told me his mother says she had been besides her self worrying where he'd been. Logic now suggests his mother didn't know he was dead, and couldn't have buried him.
Also in Not fade away, Angel season 5, Spike tells the bartender he never had a proper funeral.
For a moment I had a thougth that maybe Spike later on, as a vampire, had been bured by someone who thought he was dead. But Spike would never let anyone bury him, or let anyone mortal come that close to him without killing them.

So what is this? Is Spike lieing? Or is this just a glitch in the storyline?

Most likely a glitch in the storyline, but Spike also lived in a time when it might have been more difficult to idenitfy a random dead body, perhaps not even much effort was made to and he was just buried without any word reaching his mother.

Perhaps Drusilla buried him? In the episodes of Angel (the names escape me) where Dru re-sires Darla, she's made out to be a traditionalist when it comes to siring new vampires.

So it stands to reason that she could have killed him and turned him, then took his body somewhere to bury and waited for him to rise.

That's basically what I was going to say. It wouldn't be digging himself out of a coffin I don't think, but still having to dig yourself out of the ground.

Revolver
I think he specifically says he dug his way out of a coffin though.
I agree with Revolver that he was probably just found lying there dead, and whoever found him didn't really bother. I'm guessing those days a lot of random dead tramps were found in alleyways, and for the sake of hygiene/respect buried somewhere under a blank tombstone.

Yeah I was gonna say that. When you think about the rapid spread of infections and disease and stuff they would have buried people pretty quickly!
Well, i take it as Spike regularly stayed out a few nights in a row, so his mom wouldn't have suspected anything weird.
Just because we never saw him get buried doesn't mean it didn't happen. I think when Spike implied he'd dug himself out of a grave, that implied that it actually happened.
If not then its just a big moment where the writers FU. Im goin with my theory 🙂

That makes sense. Drusilla probobly sired him and then wandered off for a while, waiting for him to rise, and then someone found him and buried him. This would explain his comment on having to claw out of his own grave. Then, he got cleaned up and introduced Dru to his mother and we see the events of LYPTM.

From what we've seen of Spike before he was a vampire, I really can't see him staying out for several nights in a row. He was a real mummy's boy and seemed to spend more time with her than he did anywhere else.

So I think she would have found it very strange for him to not come home, which is why she expresses how worried she was when he does return home.

But it's all interpretation isn't it!

That's true. I imagine he was gone a few days and that's why his mother was freaking out. A few days is enough time for her to get really worried and have enough time to be sired, buried, and un-bury himself.

Spike was showed as quite the Mama's boy. I doubt he'd go anywhere without her knowing or with him for long

maybe he wanted to see if he could get out of a grave like the vampires in the sunydale graveyard
