White hair. Black trench coat. Lots and lots of hair gel. Black on black on black. Shoes that make him look taller. 😉 These are some of the things that make Spike "Spike". So, what do you guys think about his look?

Personally, I think that it's major overkill. If I ever saw him lookin' like Spike in public I'd either die laughing or run away in the other direction. 😀 The outfit is a bit goth for me, I'm very NOT into the punk look. 😀

And, hair-wise, does anybody else think that Spike looks kinda like Jay Manuel?

Hm... Let's compare. 😀

... Or maybe not so much. 😛 Anyway, do you guys love Spike's look? Hate it? Have it yourself? 😉

I have it myself 😀 Well, sort of. He goes for the punk/rocker look which I'm very much into. If I saw someone like him walking around in public, I wouldn't think twice about it, lol. I hang out with those types of people 🙂

And, I don't think Spike looks anything like that guy 😛 If we're going to compare who he looks like, Billy Idol would be the obvious choice 😀

Ah, I love you babe, but... Your look frightens me. :tongue3: It's a bit hard-core for me, I'm pretty timid with people that I don't know. 🙂 I don't really know what my look is, it changes. I dunno. It's athletic, girly, preppy, and nerdy at the same time. :biggrin3: Think natural blonde, light brown eyes, braces, dark jeans, sparkly pink shirt, and gray sweater.

And yeah, haha, when I saw Jay it SEEMED similar at the moment , but now... Eh, not so much. 🙂 And I never really saw the resemblance between present day Spike and Billy Idol. Fool for Love Spike and Idol are quite similar looking though.

aw, i love you too! we're like polar opposites; i couldn't stand dressing like that :P to each their own, i guess. :)
I nearly died laughing when I first saw that get-up when I first watched Fool For Love.

Hahaha, actually, I LOVED the look on him... I mean, in real life, it's definitely a "No", but as a character... I thought that he worked it, he looked uber-bada**. :biggrin3:

GrrArghx agrees: aw, i love you too! we're like polar opposites; i couldn't stand dressing like that 😛 to each their own, i guess. 🙂

Agreed. 🙂 Lol, I like to blend with the crowd, and I'm quite into a natural look, so no make-up, fake tan, hair dye, or anything like that for me. But if it works for you, then it works for you. :biggrin3:

I love Spike's look. Have since the beginning.I think there's an arrogance to his 'look' that fits his character perfectly. Like most would shy away from lookin' like that and he just doesn't give a piss.
Wouldn't think twice either about seeing someone like that outside. It's what most of my friends look like (minus the bleached hair) so obviously I think it's hot 😀 😀

I like his look. But like Joan said, I don't like when his hair is slicked back much. I just love the color because it's unique. But then again, it works only on screen because he's a punk Big Bad vampire. If I meet someone with this hair and dress like this in real life, I would think it's ridiculous.

I love Spikes look. It's the essence of cool, especially the coat. It's a very hard look to carry off though, I saw a guy wearing a similar leather trench coat walking round a supermarket the other day and to be fair he looked like a total prat. I could never copy Spikes look, wearing that sort of clothes in everyday life looks kinda out of place. However Spike's appearance was a very important tool in translating his character to the audience. If he had worn a plain suit, or trackies and a polo shirt he wouldn't have been such an effective character.

Hm, difficult question! I think Spike is cute, but a lot if has to do with the way he is and that you know him. He really pulls of the look, but that has more to do with the setting. I mean, I think everyone's sense of dressing in Buffy is kind of bad (What's with all the leather coats? :-D), so it's not like he stands out or anything. But I do think that some of his attributes are really nice, like the super blond hair. And when he fighting principal woods mother he was sooo friggin' hot! He looks like Sid Vicious!

Spike's look is what it makes him Spike. I couldn't imagine him looking any different, more importantly i wouldn't want him to look any different.

He looks like a human pint of Guinness! 😛

Personally, I think he looks ridiculous, and there are parts of Angel s5 where I am actually embarrassed for him! It's just so affected, doesn't feel a bit natural to me.

TBH, I think that's the point of Spike's look.
I love Spike's look, but mainly on Spike. I still feel that punk/goth/leather look is very foreign too me, and doesn't belong in my " social group". I know that's silly and prejudice, but that's just the way I feel. Maybe I've watched too many movied where the people in black leather and shiny white hair kills you, or simply just tell you that you're not cool enough to hang with them.
But I also think that a lot of people actually are "bad", as in mean, and dress in leather to show that off, and have a attitude to match. So it's not like my prejudice is all that silly, just not necassary, considering that I used to hang out with black haired metal rock chicks in high school, and they were the sweetest. Weird - and probably sweaty- for wearing leather in the summer, but sweet 😉

Of course, even if I meet someone like Spike in real life and was immediatly a bit intimiated by him, I would probably get so hot if that kind of "bad boy" went up to me and flirted. Spike has scarred me for life that way. Everyone in leather both scare me and turns me on. It's a problem.

Btw, now I'm talking about his current look, not the 70's look. I'm not sure what I feel about that look, specially on Spike. Maybe more weird than hot. I'd rather see that look on other people, since I'm not used to that look on him. It's still better than his "good guy" look, you know, the shirts he wore to seem normal and safe or dressed up for Buffy?

It's pretty much the same for me. 🙂 I mean, the first thing that you notice about somebody is how they look. I spend all my time with people who are fairly prep (Hm... Aeropastle, I guess. 😀 ) and we all look quite "Normal", you know, like most people look, and so when you see somebody with all that black leather and piercings and white hair... It just comes off as ridiculous. :biggrin3: To me, at least.

But I also think that a lot of people actually are "bad", as in mean, and dress in leather to show that off, and have a attitude to match. I dunno. Like, at my school, there's kind of a "Group" of girls (they all sit at the same lunch table- It makes them a group. 😀 ) that all mostly have dyed hair (blue, black, etc) and eye liner and stuff such as that. And until I met them I really didn't like them because their look freaked me out. Of course, once I met them, they're quite nice, but still... Dyed hair is just not for me. :biggrin3:

Honestly, I've never seen a RL person in my LIFE that looks even mildly similar to Spike. Nobody. If I did see somebody that looked like Spike, as I said, I'd either laugh or run. 😉 I'm definitely not attracted to that type at all- Bad boys are alright, but punk rockers aren't bad boys in my mind. 🙂

I... Just don't think that Spike could ever look mildly normal. Since I don't think that James Marsters looks normal. It may be the cheekbones, they're superhuman. 😉

yes, we are the sweetest ;P (and yes, summer is quite uncomfortable at times):cool2:

I agree with a lot of the comments, but let's be fair here, James has chiseled good looks, that helps when pulling off any outfit.

I don't think he looked silly at all in the Buffyverse, in the real world, even James told a story about teenage girls pointing and laughing at him during shooting season.

James really has the perfect appearance to pull it off because he's just tall enough, and just muscular enough to fill out the outfit. Even someone like David who is super-broad and a bit taller would look pretty scary in the Spike look, where James doesn't look especially intimidating.

But really, post-streets Gunn was the only guy who dressed normally in Jeans and a t-shirt. Xander's clothes were often comically mismatched.

Vampires traditionally wear all or mostly black, and long coats of one kind or another were and still are fashionable (plus it was a trophy, though we didn't know that at the time). Angel wore one quite often, and so does Clark Kent as his costume as "The Blur." James almost always combs his hair that way because he doesn't like it naturally curly. The blond hair and black nail polish were kind of weird, but I think more than anything else they, along with the distinct accent, were what really made the character of Spike stand out from the very start.

I think the look is why Spike makes such a good transition to comics - he's very identifiable, he looks unique in relation to the other characters and that kind of styling fits really well into the comic medium. His look is his signiture and many of the other characters are lacking in this department to the point where it can be difficult to tell who is who. Xander's eye patch works well as a signiture item too.
