I am having a hard understanding why it is taking Spike so long to recover. He is a veritable immortal with amazing healing capabilities. He should not have been in the wheel chair as long as he was. I understand it helps the story line in creating a hatred for Angelus, but realistically in the vampire world Spike would not have been in that wheel chair for that long.

Well...he wasn't in the wheel chair that long. That was one of the big reveals towards the back nine of S2, that Spike was playing up the injury to throw of Angelus.
And, his injury was pretty serious before that. He had an entire church totally collapse on him. But it wasn't as bad as he made it out to be. He was playing it up.

Perhaps I created this thread prematurely. I have not watched the show in years, and one cannot always remember every single detail of what one watches. In the back of my mind I remembered Spike faking it and I think going to Buffy to get her support in helping him return Angelus' soul, but it just strikes me as strange that he would willingly fake it for so long.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Remember, back then Buffy wasn't anything more than his enemy (although I think he always respected her as the Slayer). He didn't want to team up with her. He only resorted to seeking out her help because Angelus upped his game in trying to awaken Acathla and end the world. Spike even said it himself to Buffy, that Angelus really could do it, and that he couldn't stop him alone. I think he was faking the extent of his injury to kind of lay in wait for his opening.

A large part of his "Roller Boy" time in Season 2 would certainly have been legitimate, however. Compare Spike's condition in Season 2 with that in Season 7, after Buffy rescued him from the First Evil and its super ubervamp. Probably, he was almost as severely injured in Season 7, barely able to stand unassisted in "Showtime," then had only a few bruised ribs in "Potential." Certainly, Spike spent quite awhile faking it after he had actually recovered in Season 2, but also a legitimate reason for his slow healing at that time would have been poor nutrition. Angelus wouldn't have hunted for him, and Dru was so obsessed with having "Daddy" back that she almost certainly never gave Spike a second thought. Without blood of some type, Spike's healing process would definitely be slowed. His much faster recovery in Season 7 was primarily due to Buffy's more conscientious care in seeing that he was properly fed. It's been speculated among fans that he might have even received some of Buffy's own blood, since she knew of its restorative powers on vampires from Season 3 with Angel, but whether that was true or not, it's without a doubt true that he received blood of some sort in adequate quantities to speed his healing process.

it seems that Spike has often been a bit slow getting better, not like the historic vampire lore.
Take the episode Damages in Ats, at the end of the episode all Spike had was a couple of scratches on his wrists, the wus had an op.
Pretty slack for a vamp huh?
