I'm curious about people's spiritual beliefs and other rituals they may have. This isn't gunna be a debate about religion or anything, I'm genuinely curious about people's beliefs.

I'm an atheist, but I believe in some kind of karma- seeing it with one guy who used to send me death threats including a voodoo doll and then getting a brain tumor two years later (which got cut out, then grew back, then got cut out again, and I have no idea what happened to him after)

And my sort of talisman that keeps me grounded is my promise ring which I've had for the last three and a half years. You know how people have the semicolon tattoo, that's basically the same thing for me.

So anyone here spiritual or has some unique belief?

I'm trying to accept my own brand of romanticism these days. It is a reaction to scientism and rationalism. I am not sure exactly what to call this movement. Radical humanism? Pessimistic humanism? It is about trying to appreciate every expression of our humanity - even the bad stuff. Lost of semi-spiritual and quasi-scientific beliefs about how the mind works. Lots of Freud.

Rituals consists of reading romantic literature and learning poetry by heart. Then go out, drink, have fun, accept life.

I should ask: Did you inform the police? I wanna ask: Can I borrow your guardian angel?

I know a fair bit about Freud! But that's cool 🙂
I know in myself I try and focus on being as positive and helpful to those around me.

Yes, I did inform the police, several times. Two of them were like "I don't blame him" and thought I deserved what I got. Eventually did get a restraining order on him but then he got a good lawyer and it was overturned cos gays deserve death threats apparently, or some crap. My mind is a bit foggy on the details.
But yes you may! I'll inform the angel to pay you a visit soon 😉

Wow! You've just confirmed all my worst prejudices about Australia. Not that everything is all puppies and rainbows over here - especially when it comes to the police and these kinds of issues - but still.

I lived in the middle of no where in WA. Give it 20 years and we might catch up with the rest of the world.

WA = "Wait Awhile" We are the wild west compared to the east coast ... the meth miners were the top of the food chain for years.
I've been waiting on a thread like this. Because spirituality was something that was absent from my life for the last 16 years - and feels like it scratched my soul a bit.

I find the Catholic Bible so intriguing! Its the oldest fanfic ever written, the oldest recorded story on the planet. The message of eternal life is just amazing, when I am done on this planet, I get to go somewhere else! Im a little bit excited to see what happens next. The soul lives eternally when the sins are forgiven and a life on Earth has been lived. My take on the bible may be a little different from the Church - but even Jesus went against organised religion, and showed the true path - in forgiveness. We are human, we make mistakes, and Jesus told us, thats ok, we are forgiven, we can still be good people and do good things. I truly believe he lived and died on earth to show humans the way.

This body is vessel, I have not cared for it when I turned my back on Jesus, I thought I could control it, punish it when it didnt behave to societies standards. But I am only human in this form. In meditation and daily prayer, I have found the path to forgiveness and then healing. I have forgiven myself for what I have done to me - forgiving others will come in time. And that is so freeing.

No one has to believe in what I do - everyone finds their own path, but I found the bible a good guide for life. Especially to live the life I want to live, and not the life I "should" live according to modern society.

Some of my spiritual beliefs do go against what Catholicism teaches, I am certainly affected by the Moon, there is far more to that than science would have us believe. I have been cleansing my homes with Sage for 20 years. And I am slowly finding relief with the use of oils, although healing oils are in the bible.

They've cancelled Catholic Mass in my town, so I am a bit peeved off at them right now - might go join the weed nuns.

I think I like the concept of religion, and I used to be Christian myself for a number of years (although it's because I didn't wanna be gay and thought I could pray it away. That didn't work). I do like one church near my house and been to a few of their meetings. I volunteered in a project of theirs two years ago to renovate a house for the women's refuge. So that happy stuff I like a lot. When religion is used for hate, that's where I have a problem with.

I do like aspect of Buddhism and the Satanist bible- where you are your own God. But I've been to a Buddhist temple a couple of times and done meditation and such there. I could feel the calmness just by being at the temple even before meditating. It was unreal.

I've been to a Pagan meeting as well, but was probably not my thing. Chanting barefoot to the moon was a bit too much for a newbie. But I love the whole "Love the Earth" thing.

I do have a life bible I follow- anyone read The Shoalin Way by Steve Demasco? So many points from his book I've applied to my own life and I've lent that book multiple times to friends who are going through a rough patch.

Simon Amstell is my guru. Or at least he used to be. Not all of what he says fit with my romanticism thing. I am very anti-Buddha and anti-Sermon on the Mount at the moment. It's an experiment. Let's see how long it lasts.

^ Steve Demasco wrote a chapter on this very thing. If I had my book at the moment I'd quote it, but it's something along the lines of, if something big like a bill is stressing you out, then there is no point stressing about it. I wish I could word it properly, but certainly getting the gist from Simon too.

I was brought up to have no gods and no masters. 😛 In fact, my mum got mad at an after school club we went to that forced the kids to pray to Jesus - she didn't know this would be happening. She told us we could decide once we were adults as children's opinions are dismissed amongst religious adults, and that it should be up to us. I think a lot of that is because she was baptised as Catholic as a child when she had no interest in its indoctrination.

So yeah, I'm not religious in the slightest, but have at it if it's your bag.

Nah I'm not a spiritual person at all. I doubt there's anything after this life so I just try to enjoy while I'm here. A simple moral life guide of "try not to be a dick" works for me.

That is very much were I am, too. 'Enjoy yourself. Try not to add to the load of others.'
When I look at the stars, which I do often, I imagine thats where my soul will go. One of those billions of planets out there, a whole other world. And the only way to get there is to live a good(for lack of a better word) life on Earth. Again this is where my beliefs differ from the church, they would think this absurd, but the bible is to be interpreted by the individual, and some would be lost in translation. The church has moved too far from the message and into politics, a long, long time ago.

With our lack of advancement in space travel, Im starting to wonder if this is the way we travel to other worlds. I definitely believe in old/wise souls, but havent thought too much into how many lives we could live. When the Earth was created, according to the bible, it was a paradise, and heaven is a promised paradise. So I kinda imagine that each planet was created as a paradise. And our souls travel between them, after a life or lesson lived.

I believe in belief, but I don't necessarily believe in any religion. I guess out of them all, I'd most associate with Buddhist views, but I would never consider myself anything but atheist. I believe in science over anything, but I don't discredit those who do believe in religion. I'm basically a live and let live kinda person. I was baptised Christian but I actually think myself as a hypocrite if I go to a church for a wedding or a christening, because they ask me to pray and sing hymns containing text that I don't personally agree with.

I am a very spiritual person though, I believe in reincarnation and the afterlife, and that there are multiple places souls go until they're sent back into a new body. I've always wondered where my soul was before, because I'm me but I'm more than a flesh and blood body.

I have however had some religious experiences that I can't explain. I visited Vatican City back in 2011 and went to St Peters Basilica and while I was there I experienced such an amazing and overwhelming feeling of calmness and serenity. I could put it down to the beauty of my surroundings, or it could have been some divine intervention, I don't know, but I felt so peaceful there.

I'm not a fan of the idea of belief. If I can't KNOW something, then I prefer not to pretend that I do. Honestly, I found Topher to be the most relatable Whedonverse character in terms of worldview:

People are ALREADY incredibly emotional, illogical creatures. So putting belief at the base of our worldview is just taking a bad situation and making it worse.

You got it upside down. People are incredibly emotional, illogical creatures so belief makes total sense. Denying belief means denying our basic humanity.

I agree that belief is very NATURAL. I just don't think that that makes it GOOD. There are plenty of natural things that are terrible. I think that belief is one of those things.

I've seen too much to believe in karma working on principles of human defined justice. In the interest of not starting an argument over belief I won't say why I believe it beyond stating that if the universe was as people who believe it is inherently just define it, then our world would be a very different place.

That said, I was once learning western occultism of the Hermetic tradition, and a teaching that made sense to me was that to build up harmful occult energies had to be experienced by the occultist as it was channeled through him, so to speak (I'm keeping this as simple as I can). There were ways around it, but even then if the target's aura was stronger (as it probably was, otherwise the occultist wouldn't need to resort to such an attack, which is why still more methods were available to prevent that from happening) then it would bounce back with its original strength combined with the strength of the aura it bounced off of (which means more than twice as strong, and they believed this is part of why the so-called Threefold Law was invented by certain Wiccans, to try to prevent many would be curse givers from harming themselves, and to blame themselves should they somehow rationalize trying to cause harm anyway).

But I personally view karma as a blind machine. I can't seem to find a detailed explanation on the net that this board will allow a link to, so to briefly describe it, the effects of our actions continued to be felt through the generations. The Wheel crushes guilty and innocent alike (and may crush the innocent more because they watch their backs less), and as humans are fairly controlled by robotic reflexes then the violence and terrible deeds tend to outweigh the kindness and mercy that results in the mess we have today.

I wish I could explain it better (or better yet, could post a facebook link without this board's subroutines trying to turn it into a media link in some knee-jerk way). I can try to explain it in more depth later, if you wish.

Beyond that...I really don't want to believe in reincarnation as I consider it a deeply disturbing concept...to forget and be made into an amnesiac innocent, once again helpless and clueless...just no. Do not want. 🙁 I think if my choice is reincarnation or the annihilation of my consciousness, then I'll choose self-annihilation (unless there's some other benefit I don't know about to be gained by enduring such a terrible process). Given that it seems people with NDE (Near Death Experiences) feel no fear for such experiences, it seems an easy choice to make, but I wouldn't know until I'm there to make the choice (assuming I ever am). However, I don't feel comfortable in saying why I have come to reluctantly believe that reincarnation is real.

Though I might be willing to share how I incorporate it into a scifi I'm writing, though it's also disturbing (as opposed to the movie Cloud Atlas, which I found utterly fascinating and hope to one day read the book). Yet that's not exactly what I believe, but I do incorporate a lot of reincarnation lore into it (with a scifi twist with horror overtones).

Religious wise I'm fairly agnostic, though I do believe there are forces beyond our understanding that include paranormal effects. I'm more puzzled by it than holding faith. I might later share of my own religious journey through life as there were times I did deeply believe in gods and religion.

When I look at the stars, which I do often, I imagine thats where my soul will go

Going back to my scifi, sometimes what I imagine becomes so powerful that it's almost like an experience. It's not that I believe it, but the sensations can be incredible, sometimes it hurts knowing I'll never actually be able to experience anything like that (at least not in this life). Not too long ago I was describing a planet in a star cluster and it became so real...though I have decided against having any (active) sentient aliens in this story, I had a strong impression of subterranean lizards (or something to that effect), but they weren't mean. They had learned cooperation to survive, and their curiosity was stronger than their fear. And the underground water was filled with the most hauntingly beautiful luminescent algae that lit up the caverns...

I shared this with a friend of mine who has a physics degree and an interest in astronomy who made some guestimates about like the distance of the planet from its sun, and how the close proximity of so many stars would affect the atmosphere and encourage underground life from the likely radiation...and more so if stars that got close enough (some stars in the night sky looked almost like miniature suns, though the actual sun was distant so that some stars could be seen even in the daylight) had other life that might actually make journeys to other worlds with less than friendly intentions (actually this last part was suggested by someone else), and that the vision I described sounded as if it was more attuned to the ultraviolet spectrum, which seems especially likely with so many stars, and caverns filled with such glowing algae. She even had some ideas on why a species might develop more curiosity than fear (at least for others of its kind) which could be a result of its environment. It was all her musing, of course, but overall she said it actually made sense...and whether it's pure imagination or if there is (or at least once was) some reality to it, I felt such a longing to be there...but hey, if reincarnation is real, we wouldn't necessarily be limited to one world (and even if we were then that would say disturbing things since our own world can't survive forever, and I think the chance of any species to spread to other star systems is minimal at best).

Just sharing in case it interests you. 🙂

Always interests me!
I'm an atheist and (what you'd probably call) a skeptic. I don't believe in gods, ghosts, psychic powers, karma, the afterlife... none of that stuff. I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to invent explanations for things that can't be explained at this moment. Phenomena that can be explained by science seize to be supernatural and become natural. And things that cannot be explained will have to be investigated and we'll just have to wait and see.

Anyway, I don't like the word 'believe', but I'll use it anyway for the sake of this topic. So let's look at what I do believe in.

Some people might say that, because I don't believe in god, I believe in nothing and that, to me, life has no meaning. That is not true! If you share my views, life is everything! Because if there's nothing after we die, this life is all we have, so we better use it while we still can.
I believe in love. I believe in kindness. I believe that it is natural for human beings to look after one another and it is unnatural to be selfish. And the fact that this kind of behavior can be explained through evolutionary biology doesn't undermine it one bit! In the contrary! I think learning and understand how nature works is absolutely beautiful. It fills me with joy to learn that almost all of the atoms in the Universe were formed in stars and that the atoms that make up my arm came from a different star than the atoms that make up my eyes. And they may be stars that don't even exist anymore!
I think it is absolutely fascinating that a pigeon is more closely related to Tyrannosaurus rex than Tyrannosaurus rex is to certain other dinosaurs. I think it is almost (but just almost!) unbelievable that we can read out the DNA structures of animals and from the data we can construct a diagram that is often called The Tree of Life. It shows how closely every life form on the planet is related to the other life forms and it also looks incredibly beautiful. I use a picture of it as my wallpaper for my computer as well as my phone.

Am I spiritual? I don't know. I probably wouldn't call myself spiritual, because this term is often closely associated with religion, but when I look at nature, when I look at beautiful animals and plants, when I look at a snowy mountain range, when I look at the stars, I feel awe inspired. No legend or myth can move me in such a way. There is probably only one other thing that can move me like the awesomeness of nature, and that's music. It can move me to tears. I think that might be spirituality.

Was raised by a couple of non-practicing Catholics. I'm an atheist, myself. 😎

I find the Catholic Bible so intriguing! Its the oldest fanfic ever written, the oldest recorded story on the planet.

Well actually...
Quite a few religious texts predate the bible, even if you're talking about just the old testament/Hebrew version. The Kesh Temple Hymn (Sumer) & The Pyramid Texts (Egypt) are probably the two oldest, being dated around 2500 BCE! While the Rig Veda (Hindu) is the oldest text 'still in practice'. Which is possibly as old as 1700 BCE! So those are amongst the oldest fanfiction ever written. Just saying. 😉

Sorry, a history dork here. 😳

Dont apologise for knowing more - how else would I learn if not corrected? I will look into these older books and what they teach - thanks :D
I believe in science. On a societal level, I believe religion does more harm than good, even if that shouldn't be the case. So even though I was raised catholic, I am, and always have been, an atheist. There are some aspects of religion that I think are quite beautiful, even if I don't believe. Sadly I just can't overlook all the negative aspects of it, most of it comes from religion as a systemic organisation, and not religion as a belief.

However, just because I'm not religious doesn't mean I don't have certain beliefs about the universe. I think one day science will be able to explain a lot of what is unknown at the moment. I don't think this is something that I will get to witness in my lifetime.

I honestly believe that the entire Universe is a living organism; everything out there is self-aware. Alive.
As for the part we play, I rather think of us as little viruses. Imagine a HUGE body...with things living inside it. Sort of like an infinitely larger version of ourselves.
I'm not religious, but I absolutely believe in things like angels, saints, and time travel. How all of that ties into each other, I have no idea...but I also believe that some "being" created us, similar to what the monks did with Dawnie.
